Yes, that Alaska is gone forever. The story was very entertaining, and thanks for sharing.
Some take-aways:
- I'm glad they can't harass game with aircraft anymore;
- Imagine Hollywood types of today as hunters... they're all a bunch of lib pussies! Imagine ABC having a hunting/fishing show today! How un-PC!

I see Ron every so often in King Salmon and knew a little of his past but had never heard anything about most of those stories. They are especially nice as I knew a lot of the folks he worked with and know the areas as well. Thanks for sharing.

When I first moved here he hired me to put up a couple of buildings
at the lodge. Very lucky to have met him, heard some of his stories,
and rode with him in one of his Beavers.
He was 85 when I was there and still flying clients.
Phil, are you familiar with his cabin on the Ilnik?

I know some folks that really enjoyed his lodge. I used to see him around King Salmon as well. Knew there were a bunch of stories surrounding his guiding career.

Oh yeah, the Ron Hayes days. Ron was a great guy, on a personal level. He became crosswise with the Alaska State Troopers and the US Fish & Wildlife Service in the early to mid 70's. Eventually it all came to an end. Like Don Troutman, Marlin Grasser, Kurt Lepping and others, Ron paid a price for pushing the limits of fair-chase and other ethical standards. All in all, Ron is a very nice guy and personable. Charming, in fact.

The Emperors are still there in large flocks and the numbers on Kodiak these days is getting larger all the time. Flocks of hundreds are common... A big reduction in the limit and continued hunting would be a good thing, IMO...
I did get to shoot them in the bad old days...

I have an article from the 1969 Gun Digest by Jack McPhee entitled Caribou of Alaska, where he talks about moving up to Alaska shortly after WW1. I'm still thinking like a kid because I wish I could go back in time......:(....but I can't.
