My neighbor brought over a Win 92 in 38WCF yesterday. It was given to her father by his uncle and now left to her. Ser# puts it in 1903. No rust, oct. bbl., smooth action, wood has some small scratches, nothing deep. Where can I get a fair appraisal?
Thanks Coach

There are a lot of variations, but the current BBGV shows a 90% condition Model '92 as being worth $3000 with a 25% premium for the 38-40 WCF.
It drops rapidly to $2350 plus the premium for an 80% rifle.

wow, sold with no reserve... I would have thought it would bring $2500 at least. I learned to hunt on a '92 carbine in .38/40, great little rifle.

They have to be pretty darn prefect to bring top dollar. Remember they have to have good rifling and most don't. Even the really nice ones can have a poor bore.

agreed..., on the one I used, the rifling was only a suggestion, the gun must have had a lot of use early in it's life..

On 12-10-2013 I dickered down a pawn shop from $845 to $795 on this 1904 Win 94 38 W.C.F. rifle with minty original bore and patina finish. For the last 5.5 years I can't seem to get that pawn shop down on anything, but this rifle had been there a long time with little interest. I have shot it with 38-40 dies and 38-40 brass, a 180 gr 40 cal bullet and 25 gr H110. Kicks like a 30-30.

All the 38-40s seem to have good bores. All the 25-20s and 32-20s seen to have bad bores or 1920s Win factory to gunsmith supplied barrels with good bores. And most 1920 gunsmiths seem to not know how to headspace a 25-20.
My half baked theory based on personal anecdotes is that the 38-40 ammo was hard to find or expensive in the early 1900s before smokeless powder and non corrosive primers were standard.
I don't see many 44-40 bores, as the price tags keep me away.

Also, a lot of folks didn't shoot more than absolutely necessary in the old days.... I still recall my grandfather flinching every time we shot skeet..... "wasting all those shells"
