I like them both; been back and forth over the years on which is my favorite - I own rifles chambered for both and just decide season by season which to favor. There isn't enough difference between the two on the big game we have in my area to sway it one way or the other.

Can't go wrong with either of those. I have far more history with the 270, it has never let me down. However, don't believe I would have ever had a different result had I been using a 308. Most rifle in both calibers tend to be accurate just as they come from the factory, but suspect the 308 has a little edge.

Between those two rounds, to me it's more about the individual rifle, SA, LA, weight, intended purpose, etc.

I'm not real impressed with the two .270's I've/I'm loaded/loading for.
270's more powder dumped and not much gain over the .308. For instance the way I load 150's in each run 2850fps. I could also use a .308 130TTSX just as happily as a 130-140gr in the .277.
Had I been ready I could of bought Brads Kimber Montana in .308 yesterday and most likely would of parked my Sako A7 in .270win for quite some time.
Will agree with individual rifle comment. Only reason I currently own a 270win is because I'm a big Sako A7 fan and it was in my face at the right time.

Muzzlehunter67: I really enjoy both calibers. For most medium sized Big Game either will do fine. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

308 for a lot of subjective reasons I will not get into in a pubic forum. I hear the 270 is being discontinued.

LOL, Hutch! Inside of 300 yards it doesn't really matter if your talking 150 grain pills. Beyond that the 270 shines as it drops less. The 308 has advantages in loading heavies.
Flip a quarter...or better yet get a 7-08 and have the better ballistics in the efficient 308 case! (yes, I know I just opened another can!)

I own both and have shot a few deer with them. They both work. Every .270 I've owned has been a good shooter. I had one .308 that was fussy and it eventually went down the road. I'm looking to get another .308 soon.
The .308's advantage is it can run heavier bullets, and uses a lot less powder. The .270 can run high BC/SD bullets a little faster.
With iffy powder availability and powder cost rising, you can go through a can pretty quickly loading .270's. Ditto that for .30-06's. The .308 is arguably more efficient.
Buy which one you like and have fun.

I load for both. In my humble estimation I think the .308 has a slight edge in accuracy. A 130 grain TTSX and 4895 are a pretty sweet combination in the .308.

Both, I can't imagine not having one of each in my gunsafe. If I had to pick one though it would be 270.

I haven't owned a .270 in quite a while, but really can't say why. I kinda cut my hunting teeth with a .270 and have had more DRT kills with a .270 than any other cartridge. I guess the reason I don't currently have a .270 is because I prefer short actions and using Berger VLDs my .260 and .308 seems to electrocute deer as quickly as my .270s used to. Would be hard pressed to say there's much difference in performance out to 350 yards or so. They will both shoot 130s and 150s at about the same velocity. The .270 bullets of any given weight will have a little better BC but you'd hardly notice the difference out to 350 or so. Even though there's not any mainstream really high BC bullets available for the .270 (as compared to the 6.5s and 7mms), it will launch those bullets faster than you could launch a similar BC from a .308 and therefore outperform a .308 at long range. Using Berger hunting VLDs as an example, the 130gr .277 Classic Hunter has a G7 of .254. The .270 with a 24" barrel can launch that bullet at pretty darned close to 3100. To get a BC that high with a .308 you have to go to the 168gr Classic Hunter. Realistic velocity with that bullet at similar pressures from a .308 probably tops out at about 2850. The .270 wins over the .308 at long range... Hmmm... I need to build another .270...
One thing going for the .308 is barrel life. Much less powder through a bigger hole = a barrel life that's hard to beat. If you want to shoot your rifle a bunch, the .308 might be a better choice.
I'd recommend you let what you're gonna do with the rifle decide...
John

You need at least one of each.
