I always carry a small Spyderco when I'm in Europe. So far, and I've been doing it for years, the only problem I've had is that the guards in museums, especially art museums, don't let you carry it while in the museum. I've always left it with them and always got it back.
Airports have the same rules that ours do. No knives in the security zones. Check it with your luggage; don't try to carry it on or you will lose it and maybe get to talk to some VERY tough cops.
In general, most Europeans don't seem to have the fear of pocket knives that many urban and suburban Americans do. Show them a knife and they think "PeekNeek": Sausage. Baguettes. Cheese. Pate. Ripe pears. When I'm out in the boonies there I carry a Swiss Army "Sentry" lockblade. Perfect picnic knife.

I've had similar experiences in Europe. I check it in my luggage and it goes with me when I'm traveling around or working. I carry a Benchmade folder and much of the time, I'll completely conceal it in my pocket instead of allowing the hanging tab to show.
There are 2 rules to success:
1. Never tell everything that you know.

Nope..you are ok with a sub 3" non locking blade...If you have a knife with a blade of 3" or over,or a knife with a locking blade of any size, basically you need a "good reason" to carry it in public. Don't ask me to define "good reason" as I think the whole thing is BS.

Sounds like they should serial number and register such implements. Then there would be no issues.
