Is a candle latern system a good idea or not. I have a high buck hunt coming up. Thought this might be a good idea so that I don't wear out my batteries in my headlamp? Thanks CD

I have a candle lantern bought from Cabelas over 20yrs ago, it gives off very little light. Use one of the LED headlamps, batteries last a long time................

The one place I do like a candlelantern is in winter camping using Gore-Tex type single-wall tents. I prefer these for the winter camping I do as they are light, very high quality, storm-proof and freestanding, thus, easy to setup in bad weather on frozen surfaces.
However, they can/do collect substantial condensation and the candle lantern helps to disperse this, plus, it is a cheerful, warm glow in a lonely, cold camp. The LED headlamps can be fubared by cold, but, the candle burns on, so, I am now on my second one.
I have just ordered my third G-T tent, this is an Integral Designs MK1-XL and it replaces my beloved, original Early Winters Light Dimension that served me so well for more than 20 years. I also have a Bibler Solo Dome, but, it is sized for VERY skinny folks, which I am not. These tents, IF, used correctly, are the best way to deal with short, intense, solo trips in really harsh winter conditions, especially with the candle lantern....it's one little item that I pack on almost every trip.

I've wanted a candle lantern for over 20yrs. I always thought they were just a gimick/gadget, but still wanted one anyway. Well I FINALLY got one this week. I haven't fired it up yet, but I did tear it appart and am very impressed with it's efficient design and quality construction. It should be perrrfect in my Paratipi this winter! Is it wrong to wish winter was here already?

Not wrong to wish for winter when we deal with 90-100+ every day here.....

Candle Lanterns are great. Nice warm glow. Puts out nice light , certain amount of heat. Great in cooler temps. Can use citronella candles to help keep bugs at bay. More compact than a gas lantern. Great compact supplement to LED headlamp.

I'm hopin' so. I haven't bought any bug candles yet because I was afraid they'd stink up the tent. Better than being bit I guess. I just discovered the joys of headlamps this last year as well. I've got two LED headlamps now, and can't believe I ever lived without them. They're great!

Anyone tried the cute little reflectors they sell for the lanters? More weight, bulk and cash, but.......

Have one, not tried yet. Can't hurt. Not much weight or size. I dont' expect lots of light, just enough to manuever etc... when getting ready for bed etc... and up in the mornings. That will do just right for us. LED headlights for the rest.

I like the warmth that a candle gives off especially if it's cold. Instead of a candle light I use a survival type candle that is packed in a can. Mine is made by a company called Coghlan's, it has three wicks. You can burn just one or all three at the same time. In a small 2 man tent it makes enough heat even below freezing to be in a t shirt. Weighs about 4 ounces. Several other companies make them as well. Mine came with a pack of waterproof matches in the can also. Pretty neat and simple. I do like the Led headlamps for reading. etc.

I just made one to use next winter. It's very light but might be a little fragile. It should be okay packed in my cook pot. Still, I think I'm going to try making one out of stouter material. -Ian http://zenstoves.net/CandleLantern.htm

Good info put out here creepingdeath, I have used a candle lantern for a while now and in a good quality tent they do indeed prolong your season as far as keeping warm. In conjuction with a LED headlamp they are a great combo for late season excursions.

Left, is your candle the one where the wicks are removable? If so, what are they made of that lets you do that?
Good to know about the tent heating ability. What's the burn time at full throttle?
