I'd like to buy a handgun in AZ but I do not want to be on some government list for owning a gun.

You can always say you sold it, or use it, when they try to confiscate it.

Technically, no, they are not supposed to keep records of those looking for a background check for a gun purchase. HOWEVER, the dealer must keep a paper record. On top of that, I assume you're a hunter... if I were so inclined, I would assume that literally every single person whose bought a hunting license is a gun owner. I would also assume that if you have a concealed carry license, then you are a gunowner. States have no obligation not to share those lists with feds already, and in some places that's already public record.
Probably not unreasonable to assume that facebook and google already know that you're a gun owner based on your website interests and we know they knowingly and unwittingly share information.
So, what the heck are you afraid of? Just buy a gun if you want it.

I'd like to buy a handgun in AZ but I do not want to be on some government list for owning a gun. You are on the list for alluding that you want to buy a handgun without wanting to fill out mandated paperwork. I am on the list for replying to your post. You are back on the list for reading my reply. Now just go get the handgun.

Technically, no, they are not supposed to keep records of those looking for a background check for a gun purchase. HOWEVER, the dealer must keep a paper record. And the ATF makes regular visits to the dealers during which they examine said records and, I assume, make their own recordings of the details therein, which details are likely kept in some central database.

I wouldn't worry about being on the government's gun owners list. It's the gold owners list you have to worry about.

I'd like to buy a handgun in AZ but I do not want to be on some government list for owning a gun. Well then, go private sale. When a NICS check is called in, they don't ask about the gun, except whether its a handgun or long gun.No brand, caliber, serial number . Nothing. ( if it was about crime, you'd think they would ask this stuff..) What they ask about is YOUwhich I find frightening.

It is not real difficult to figure out who has guns. If it comes to confiscation, lots of people will be under the boot and not just the registered owners.
Gun dealers keep the 4473 forms until they surrender their license. At that time, they have to be sent to the ATF. It has never been any different.
I would not worry about it. If you want the gun, go get it. You will have lots of company if it hits the fan.
You did not "seen" anything, you "saw" it. A "creek" has water in it, a "crick" is what you get in your neck. Liberals with guns are nothing but hypocrites.
