In the August, 2014 Rotarian Magazine, author S. A. Swanson has a very enlightening piece by this title on internet comments and behavior.

One quote, "When people use a different name online, they sometimes view their comments as separate from their 'real' selves. That falls under a broad category of behavior that psychologists call dissociation."

The article goes on with data and scientific studies that would pretty well explain some of the behavior we see here on the Fire.

You Rotarians, pay attention to your latest Rotarian Magazine and read this article. Would love to see your assessments and feedback. If there's a way to post a link to that article, please make it happen.

Would like comments on this one.

Given that transmissions can near always be traced back to the originating keyboard, I don't dissociate.

Agree.

But we have some culprits who think they're smart enough to not get caught. Fortunately, we have some top notch IT guys who post here. And those perps seem to always get zapped.

And, Rick is onto the worst of them, handling them appropriately.

Another term in that same article, is "solipsistic introjection", which the author claims is a "fancy way of saying that when we communicate by typing, we can end up having a conversation with ourselves. While we're interacting online, on one level, we know that this is a person on the Internet, typing replies to me. On another level, it's a dialogue inside our head. And inside your head, your imagination can run wild."

Does that sound vaguely familiar... shocked

I think this is funny, because me and John Burns are, to my knowledge, are the only people who post here who use their real name.....

Quite a few folks here use their real names, and I like it. Sometimes wish I had just started out that way rather than simply applying some representative letters I already had been using on some other sites. Oh well, anyone interested knows - or is welcome to - my actual name.

That said, I realize that some cowards/dodgers/phonies here hide behind unrelated screen names. So be it - they are no different off the net.

Ween I joined Scott Fairing was my name, well kind of my real name. I was born Robert but was renamed by a boss 38 years ago and Scott stuck so that more people knew me as Scott that did Robert.

I am pretty sure Ken Howell is a guy named Ken Howell.
