Do Remington Model 700 actions have "softer" metal than other makes? Is this why they're "preferred" for some custom builds? Dicky Austin seems to think so: http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/9061552/RichardAustin#Post9061552

I actually did a couple hours of reading online, at various gunsmithing sites, and found that the std metals for the major actions are all really similar. What hardness they're treated to was a point for conjecture. Remingtons didn't exhibit any 'softness' compared to others. I tried to find anything from Jarrett about 700s being softer. No luck. So I'm going to call Bullshit.

As near as I can tell, the general consensus on Remington 700 CM actions is their Rc value is in the neighborhood of 36 (though the late Frank de Haas claimed a value of approximately 10 points higher), which is about the same as every other well-known mass produced CM rifle action. (Custom actions, such as Stiller, Surgeon, Borden, etc. appear to have slightly higher Rc values.)

This was mostly a rhetorical question to thump Dicky Austin and the usual load of dogshit he posts.

Ah the stench of a guy that posts kiddy porn.

Read what I said for yourselves. I said that is what I heard. I heard that some time ago when Kenny Jarrett was using Remington acctions for the basis of his gun builds. At the time I asked why he used Remington actions as opposed to a Sako, which was my preferred action of the time; that was the answer he gave me. I've had other gunsmiths tell me they rework the Remington action to make it more like Remington should have made it in the first place. Now if anyone like porno brick top or finn know of a benchrest winner that uses a stock Remington action please post it right up. It would be pretty interesting if someone could find K.Jarretts old info on what he did to the Remington actions, the list was pretty extensive.
Finn, wish I could say I'm surprised you'd saddle right up with a guy posting homo porn. Pretty sick [bleep].

Yeah I read your back and forth. You spurred me to some awesome research, so thanks! I want to know though how there was so much variation in the Rc values guys were getting. It doesn't really matter though.

One 'smith pointed out that many of the big outfits had gone to investment castings for their actions, so machined 4130 is more than plenty.

The other thing that stuck out was how much flex the 700s have compared to other commercial actions that are commonly used for builds, and then how much stiffer the custom actions are than the big names. Found in the pages of German Salazar.

Wow. You "heard." That's just f*cking awesome, Dicky. You're a kickass font of knowledge in other areas besides surfing, where you're the Larry Root of that sport. You hear things. And then post that you hear things. That's the true measure of an oracle.

So...you don't think a call-out thread based on something so trivial isn't childish and pointless?

Do yourself a favour and take stock of what you are doing.

Who doesn't love a good call out thread, especially where the callee throws out the homo/kiddie porn accusation card?

Micro, I do not profess to be an expert on every given subject matter, but since a true expert was kind enough to share knowledge he worked hard to get, I have no problem passing that along. Bricktop is hawking some trigger thats been recalled and then engages an argument professing the high standard of quality for that same company. In typical bricktop fashion he dug into his homo porn picture collection and posted it up with some worthless comments when it was pointed out hes hawking recalled merchandise. His collection of homo porn is pretty vile and I'd have to say the subject looked puberty aged; questionable enough his pictures got pulled. It looked like kiddie porn. So maybe there is something bricktop is an expert on, but him having boy homo pictures isn't anything I want to see. Where does a guy get [bleep] like that. Sick bastard. Check the left hand fourms, or if you're so inclined and think it's ok I'd bet he'd share it with you. Have at it but don't put that [bleep] up for the rest of us.

Nobody likes a whiner, Dicky. Your ass got handed to you and you're trying to backpedal your way out.

Don't know about the hardness of the M-700. But I did hear that Ruger's SS actions and barrels are too close in hardness to be able to take the barrel off, and just to be safe they super- glue it. It's TRUE it's TRUE, I read it on the internet!!!!! grin

Quit whining, you big bitch.

Prove this Remingtons are "softer" claim. Quit trying to mimic Larry Root and quit trying to weasel out, Dicky.
