I have no choice but to delve back into the world of 30 cals.

I have some 208 Gay Max. And some 190 Sierra MatchKings.

What else do I need to try?

A 16.5" SPS Tactical. It's threaded so I can shove the tube into my can.

Should be UBER.

If it's not, I'm gonna trip it and try the 300 Blackout or 300/221 or 300 Whisper or WTF they call that thing.

Good point on the Scenars. Is it the 155 weight everybody has love for?

They are made in 16's and 20's. Local shop insists the one inbound is a 16. Which is what I want.

I have an HTG sitting here. All alone. Waiting, wanting, craving. It should do well.

If you want to go subsonic, I'd rather have a .308 than a .300 Whisper. 308's are famous for shooting well with all sorts of loads. E

What sub-sonic load do you use?

I was gonna try Trail Boss.

I helped my bud's son develop a load with the 215gr Hybrid for his '06 a few weeks ago. It shot damn well out to 500y in the wind... 0.696 G1. We went to 800y but there were some scope/dope issues that day.

The Berger wasn't on my radar but the BC is impressive. I think he likes to change bullets like underwear grin

155 scenar's for blood letting... 178 BTHP Hornies for paper and long range steel... I've seen a lot of s-h-i-t fall to a 175 SMK also...

If you have RL-17 it'll get the 208' s you have rollin'... Varget, RL-15 or 4064 on the 155's and Pro-2000 MR on the 175's/178's...

Or so I've read...

The Hybrids from 185 up sure look good, but I don't have experience with them. If you go 208 Amax and 155 Scenar, you may just stop there. Can't think of two that would do better.

I'm a big fan of the Berger VLDs, in any weight I have shot them, 155, 168, and 175. I've got a 10 shot group with 168gr VLDs that went .662 MOA. I've killed a bunch of stuff with 155gr VLDs and they just electrocute stuff.

The 155gr Scenars are working very well. Seem to group a little better than the same weight VLDs for me. I've only shot one pig with them but they seem like they are a little harder and penetrate better than the VLDs, but maybe not as dramatic kills. The sow, a little under 200 pounds made it about 100 yards or so after the hit. I've never had them go more than a few feet after hit with a VLD.

175gr SMKs shoot great, and I have killed a few critters with them, but was not terribly impressed with how quickly they kill in comparison to other bullets I have used.

My LTR seems ambivilent about the Amaxs and the Scenars and the Matchkings (with Varget and BLC-2). Seems to stick them in nice 1 1/2" clusters time and again. Shove some 165gr BT down it's bore though, and it goes sub-MOA every time.

Go figure....

For many years the 308 was my deer gun, back when I owned my M77 RL (now a 250 AI..) it only saw the 165 gr Hornady and just worked. Can't see a need for the 30-06 frankly...

I will check locally for some Boogers. And I will order me some Scenars. Then I will be just like scenarshooter, only without the trophies...

But I have had a hard time getting them to shoot at mag length in the past.

We'll see.

Travis,

You shooting steel, fur, or both?

The 215 Burgers seem like a tough bullet. Although they shot well in junior's rifle, he hasn't killed anything with them. Haven't seen many firsthand reports either, except that the tips bent at ~1900 fps in water. Sub-loads will have lower rotation than HV loads too.

Early reports have the LRAB's expanding pretty easy, the 190 or 210 could be just the ticket if ungulates are on the menu...

I have no doubt that is a good bullet.

But I wouldn't mind trying something with a little more BC.

The Scenars have been a little less finicky to get to group well than the VLDs. VLDs can be made to shoot as well but takes a little more work. So, on steel, I kinda prefer the Scenars.

On critters, I have not found ANYTHING that makes an animal take fewer steps than the VLDs.. Even with poorly placed shots. Not advocating that, but on pigs, I put a bullet in whatever part is exposed

I've only shot two critters with the 155gr Scenars, pictured below. The pig went 100 yards or so after a good hit through the heart/lungs. Bullet exited. She was probably just under 200 pounds. Coyote was DRT at 165 yards. Right now, I'd say I prefer the VLDs on critters, but I'm gonna continue to use the Scenars to get a better feel for their performance.

You're likely to get the Berger Hybrids or LRAB to shoot better than the VLD: SAAMI chamber, mag length, etc.

The Hybrids have a more stout jacket, as others have mentioned, and I haven't heard much about how they do when the velocity gets way down low.

I'd start with LRAB over Hybrids because they do open easily, and they haven't been sensitive to seating depth. Same with 208 Amax.

I haven't been able to find any for sale. There may be other small dealers that I don't know about. I did get on the Berger site, pull up the list of online dealers, and start checking their websites.

You might find someone on the fire here who would sacrifice some on the alter of deflave.

2.) He never heard of the internet.

Tried a bunch of schit in my 7.62's...just about everything shot well, even the 208's with RL17.

Finally settled on the Skinners...just a kick ass bullet. Accurate, and Pat's thread proved to me it can take anything I hunt. Sure makes it easy at the reloading bench. Just keep them close to my Varget...

This was at 578 yds over the hood of a Jeep with a fixed 6x. But in the interest of full disclosure it was a Finnish Tikkler.... smile

That's actually good...

It gives you time to locate some of those pesky 178 A-max that you will end up with anyway.

Scenars are a tough act to follow but a hair better BC with the 178 ends up being 100fps difference at range.

Between the SeekNards and the A-Max...?

Two winners here...choice depending on if you are looking for penetration or expansion...

I shoot them both but generally I want some expansion so I like the terminal characteristics of the A-Max better.

/start[merunningmydrunkmouth] I think you should run the 208 (Freddie Mercury to the Max)...Especially if you are going to try some subs. Of course, I don't know much about this .30 cal world. I just know, if they are good enough for MM, they are good enough for me. If I can't the the 190 eNABLR's to shoot, that is what I will run /end[merunningmydrunkmouth]

I have the 208's to try. But two things that will keep me from buying more:

1.) If they don't stabilize when sub-sonic.

2.) If I can't get them to group when seated out no further than mag length.

I need my repeater to be able to repeat...

Most likely have both. L = newest generation and bought some 2 months ago but will check when I get home. After going to Third Generations site I see I bought regular scenar's. And so that's what I've been shooting.

Not really, it depends on the rifle, and brass.

I find a load that groups well around a target velocity window of 2650-2750fps in a 20" bbl. Varget, 4064, and 4895 are comparable in the 308 case in that bullet weight. Fed 210M primer. Around 43-45gr Varget is in the ballpark in Win brass...it has the most space internally, and the actual charge weight varies with different brass.

The 155 A-Max is a ballistic turd compared to the SeeNards. Might as well go Custom Comp...

The Horn 308 G7's don't get interesting until the 178....and the 178 IS interesting.

For whatever reason, the 155 SeeNards are about the sneakiest BC'd 155....EVAH!

Flave--have you run those over a chrono? Sounds like a sneaky little sledge hammer in Special brass.

Haha! "Big box..."

Thank for the offer, but I think I'm gonna order 1,000 of them and hope for the best. If they suck, I'll just sell them.

You guys are the best.

Negative.

Last time I went to chrony some loads the wind picked up and put it on it's ass. The last three .223 loads I chrony'd were clockin' 4,400fps.

I mean... I'm good. But not that good...

I think it's broke.

Shot the same as my 29-2....go figure.

Team "My Gun Vault" just scored a new 7em-08 today....a Custom Classic Mod.70. I know, its a Winchester; luckily Sportsmans had some of the morphidite holed Talleys to fit it.

And an unfired 700 in 222, two Smith 15's and a 32-20 Marlin 94CL a VXII and VXIII Leups.

And I picked up a 788 in 243 for someone who wanted it...I don't know why they want it. Paleolithic 710......

When you contemplate shoving the tube into a can, shorter is often times better.

Here's shots 2, 3, & 4 out of the recent manufactured 700. This was with some 150gr Silvertips I found.

100yds. 1" dot.

[Linked Image]

Group #2. 190 gr. Sierra with some VarGAY. Fugg it. I got around 10lbs and about 500 of the Sierra's.

[Linked Image]

Last three for the morning. Mixed batch...

[Linked Image]

Things went UBER well to the five this afternoon.

This mofo is showing promise.

RDW,

They are both with the Seirrduh 190.

The "fast" load is clocking about 2,000fps. But that is according to the drop tables. My Chrony took a tumble and is not currently trustworthy...

I'm gonna guess 1,000fps on the TrailBoss loads. I'm leaving in a minute to shoot them at 250. That should give me a better idea.

UBER quiet. Cats are gonna hate this fuggin' setup.
