A 60-year-old man was attacked by a bear while hunting in the Smoky Lake area Sunday night.
STARS air ambulance was called to the intersection of Range Road 170 and Township Road 602 in Smoky Lake County just before 10 p.m. Sunday.
Emergency crews were already on the scene with the victim of the attack.
STARS transported the man to the University of Alberta hospital with claw and bite wounds to his chest, legs and arms. He was in stable condition and was conscious and breathing on route to hospital.
Wildlife officials say the man was lawfully hunting on private land at the time the attack. He had shot the bear and followed it into the bush. The bear then attacked him, and it is believed the man killed the bear.
