I have hunted a lot out of a ladder stand, but don't want to worry about falling. Have a permanent 4x8 but now I'm going to build a 4x4 on skids so we can move it.

Hey Chris... your ladder stand comes with a safety strap. They keep you from hitting the ground. I don't care for them either, but I'm getting more and more used to the ladders. They're a lot easier than building stands on the public land I usually hunt on. Still a pain to bring in though.

So how long y'all reckon this OSB if well painted and not sealed with junk will last in the elements?

Dave, I see the Double Nine at your waist. At age 73 I don't get up in trees anymore. It would take too long to heal if I fell. I use a portable tent like ground blind with built in stick chair. Twelve pounds. Rainresistant.Great sleeping.
Stan in SC I'm not nearly as wise as you yet, Stan. I hope to get there some day.

Sunday morning at about 11:00 I'm hearing bullhorns, sirens, lots of vehicle noise, including tracked vehicles on the move. I'm thinking, "I thought they didn't do maneuvers on hunting weekends." I came to find out that a guy fell asleep and fell out of his portable trees stand. He had no harness on and broke his back. Always wear a belt or harness.

Fire, a storm, tree falling on it... horny moose having his way with it... I've seen it, it's horrifying. A guy I went to high school with wanted to get into bowhunting. He built an elaborate tree stand (more like a fort). He was constantly out working on it, adding to it and modifying it. He spared few words talking about it either. Opening morning he gets in well before daylight and can't find his stand. He looked and looked. Finally his flashlight revealed that a beaver had cut his tree down and his fort was smashed to pieces. Mule, I didn't say not to seal it but I personally wouldn't use the Thompsons brand water seal. A good coat of paint will last a long time too.

Anybody watch Duck Dynasty? They're always declairing war on the beavers. The antics are quite funny.

I was going to dig a moat around it and fill it with swamp squids, but I like your idea better.

There is nothing wrong with the proper application of a moat. Just sayin'.

It looks fairly sea-worthy already! Nice!
