Has anyone here used a .600 or smaller muzzle diameter barrel on a 300 Winchester? Something along the lines of a Lilja #2 (.575) or such?
I've got a M70 Classic SS action and 32 oz stock coming, along with PT&G bottom metal. Would like to wind up with a rifle in the 8 to 8 1/4 lb range with a 3.5-10x40 VX3. Just thinking out loud for now, any advice is appreciated.
Thank You.

I'd flute a 4 or run an unfluted 3. Assuming a 24-26 barrel, you'll hit 8.5 all up, I think.

I've built a few that way - consider a Pac-Nor #2 and use a 1" shank before taper.. http://pac-nor.com/contours/

I built a 300wsm on a Mauser action with a thin barrel and trimmed down wood. I love it. Carries light and handles well. jmho Tim

Thanks, all.
KLM300 - That's pretty close to what I'll have, thanks for the detailed info.
Redneck - Will look into the #2, and send you the parts if I go down this road. The pre-64 you built me has a #3 on it and weighs 8 lbs 11 oz, trying to make a stainless sister to it as close to 8 lbs as is reasonable.

I too have a 300 H&H built on a pre 64 M70 action with a #2 lilja, redneck built it for me and boy does it shoot. With a Echols legend stock (edge fill) and swaro 3-10x42 it's just a tad over 7 3/4 lbs, I'm very happy with how it turned out.
