I see you mentioned a 20" barrel. Is that the light contour version?

Has the rifle been tuned up? Re bedding and the like.

7mm08,

Good deal!

I've gone up to 48 grains in some rifles, depending on the bullet. The light-for-caliber TSX's develop about the least amount of pressure of any bullets available now, according to the head guy at one of the top ballistics labs in the country.

With single-based powders like H4350, velocity normally rises at the same rate as the powder change, so with 47 grains your rifle should get around 2920 fps, and with 48 grains close to 3000.

My gun is the light contour version. It is just like it came from the factory. I have the factory bedding and factory trigger on it. Would it make a big difference if I had it rebidded and a better trigger put on it? About how much does it cost to have a gun rebedded?

I have messed with four .257 rifles, Mauser, Browning, Remington and Ruger. Somewhere between 46 and 47.5 grains of 4350 always seems to be the sweet spot - 47 grains is usually the best. A 100gr Hornady or Nosler bullet at 2,900fps is a deadly combination.

Good Luck in your quest!

Your 1 1/4", five shot grouping is pretty good for a light contour rig in factory trim.

The trigger can be tuned. I don't know what bedding would cost, but a bedding job is almost always good for consistency.

As Mathman said the factory trigger can be tuned, but my RL 77 was a used gun in super nice condition when I bought it and it had a Timney trigger in it. Shoots very nice with 100 gr Hornady SP bullets and IMR 4350. Haven't used it deer hunting yet but on one memorable weekend in October of 2009 I shot 5 antelope with it out to 300 yds and it puts them on the ground right now when you do your part.. goodluck. I shot my Pronghorn last year with mine, a 286 yard shot that turned his lights off right there...

I'm shooting the 115 Ballistic Tip and 120 Partition with 47.5grs H4831 from a 20" Ruger Ultralite. I don't even have to adjust the seater when switching bullets and both shoot very accurately.

When I die I hope I don't start voting democrat.
