So Ferguson MO is having a bit of a tiff, those around the St. Louis area are sitting in their comfy homes without fear. My two daughters and their families live in the greater St. Louis area and my cautionary calls to them to keep their eyes open and elevate their awareness seem to fall on deaf ears. It's just Dad, being his old paranoid self.

Their husbands, one a surgeon with good shooting skills, seemed almost patronizing when he accepted my advice to avoid any areas where there appeared to be crowds of people gathering unexpectedly. The other, an advanced degree scientist, gun owner and shooter could only respond, "We don't go over there very often."

Why do people feel unrest is something that only happens somewhere else? St. Louis is a tinder-box and with just the right incentive, could make Ferguson look like a birthday party.

A lot of times people cant see the trees for the forest, if you will. They get so caught up in business at hand.

Seems that most white, urban, upper class, folks I interact with are in denial about such things.

Was at a party of mostly professors and academic types ( wife made me do it ) in Durahm, NC a few weeks back. Durham is a sanctuary city and just about a third world country but I went hoping to get a line on some Duke basketball tickets. A couple of the guys drifted off and were discussing the up coming season. Talk went to guns, and one pony tailed dufus was really upset that we all had guns in our homes. He about blew a gasket when I told him I was carrying there, and honestly could not imagine why I would be as there were no criminals around.

When I tried to explain where we were and that you could go 3 blocks in any direction and be in the ghetto it still did not register.

We left shortly after.

I think it is partly being a good dad, and something akin to situational awareness (scheit, I am sounding like the Eye Hawk grin) Some of us have and others don't.

If you read up on violent crime against individuals, it has been stated that victims:
1. Never thought it would happen to them.
2. Were totally unaware and caught by surprise when it did happen to them.

I suspect #2 is a result of #1.

We ALL tend to think some riot, civil disobedience, natural disaster, car crash, violent crime, Mormon boys showing up on your front porch, is something that happens to other people.

It has to happen to somebody, may as well be you.

Kind of smart and just plain common sense in our society, to be aware of what's going on around you.

What happens when the natives in other inner cities take up the cause?

What's to stop them?

I'm kinda surprised it hasn't happened yet...

Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, Columbus, Houston, to just name a few places where it could spread.

This isn't just a local problem in Ferguson. wink

Due to changing demographics, here in my fair city, there is a well established recipient class section 8 community within a mile of Casa Mannlicher.
The area, which used to be a nice section, is all black now. Recently, there was a 16 year old arrested (and immediately released)for brandishing an AK47 in the hood.
Neighbors and I have discussed this, and have plans to deal with any riot or insurrection there.
For many years, I have carried daily, and I always have a long gun in the old 4Runner.

I have been getting the feeling that it is time to keep a long gun in your vehicle when traveling through certain areas.

Ive said it before in different contexts but for the hood rats to stage any form of assault on a distant and/or upscale target would require planning, initiative, and effort.

Think about who you are dealing with.those are all things not readily attributable to them.

..push comes to shove, despite them having their separate lives and marriage, and parents letting go of their children...

..if things got really bad, I would move to collect my daughters to a safer area, as long as they were willing to come along.

Husbands welcome to come along if want. If not, stay and hope for the best, but don't be a jerk off and ignore the potential threat,

Stomped toes be damned.

That's because they have insulated their lives from the real world and its dangers.Where I live negroes make up less than 1% of the populace and uttering the N word is almost always met with visible distain. It's someone else's problem and is therefore irrelevant to their daily living.

Caution and awareness is always good. It's like I never understood the folks that plow in flood waters when the rig ahead of them is already tail light deep.

We rarely frequent the big cities, but when we do I keep an eye on anyone that approaches my proximity.

Keep on being "dad."
