I have a 4X32 Zeiss Diatal-c thinking it would be neat on an Steyr. The cross hairs are too thin except for the range. They are just ok with a 1" tube. For a best scope at 4X I would turn a Kahles 2-7 to 4! I have that scope and find it first rate. Mine has typical Zeiss duplex, plenty heavy for general use. Not sure what reticle you have. Target duplex?? DF

After a lifetime ( 40 years) of big game hunting in North America and Africa, I cannot recall a single time when I did not find that a scope of fixed four power, or a variable scope set below 6 power did not suffice. You folks that have become convinced that you need a scope big enough for training wheels go right ahead. I'll skip the cool aide...
May as well go back to using throwing stones and hitting things with blunt objects too.

Finest fixed 4 power?
No such thing. I know you don't like fixed power scopes or low magnification scopes for that matter, but they can be very useful for whitetail hunting especially where shots are typically close and in heavy cover. For me, of all the suggestions given so far, I'd try to locate a 4X Conquest and be done with it. They also are very useful on muzzleloaders and slug guns, IMO.

They used to even be very useful on rifles for shooting western big game at 400-500 yards, but of course all that changed a generation ago, probably because of something mysterious in the atmosphere.

Seems like the number of fixed power fans haven't a strong enough voice to influence the manufacturers either. Not sure that's a generational thing, but if it is, that generation of fixed power fans seems to be dying off. The manufacturers of fixed power scopes don't put all the latest "technology" into their fixed line either which doesn't help.

My problem is that I can find fixed 6Xs much easier and of better quality than fixed 4Xs. For my needs, I'd trade most any 6x for the same, in 4x. I wish I could find a 4x that compared to my big sky 6x, since zeiss dropped the conquest.

There is a huge hole near the Canadian border filled with 22 rimfire ammunition, four power scopes and 7X35 binoculars-has to be!

I have few of those old Lyman 4X All Americans. For a while they were my primary game scope. I had one fill up with water years ago hunting all day in the rain.
I remember the hill I came down my coat soaked with rain and the scope useless, filled with rain also. I walked back to the camp, changed and took another rifle I had there.
Always good to have a back up.
Lyman fixed the scope for me.

I have an anser to the best fixed 4 power scope at a reasonable price, but it is actually 4.5X. You won't know the difference. Go to Midsouth Shooters item # 023-200183. It's a Burris Fullfield II 4.5 X14 w/ 42mm A.O., BP reticle 299.00 dollars. Set it on 4.5 and it can be called fixed power. I have 2 of them and wouldn't trade 'em for anything I know of in a reasonable price range. Who knows? You might just want to cheat a little and turn up the power. If you don't tell, nobody will know.

Best I have ever used is the 4x32 Zeiss that's on my 35 Whelen with the FX-II 4x on my 50 cal black powder a good scope near second.

I have used most brands at one time or the other but the one I kept and still use is an old M8 Leupold with a heavy duplex.

Yep, I'd take any of those! I try to keep my eyes open for a Zeiss as they seem to pop up here and there. Had really good luck with the two M8's I've had for a few years.

May as well go back to using throwing stones and hitting things with blunt objects too. He's right ... Something wrong if you can't find a good 4x useful on a hunting rifle. Currently own 5 of them right now. 2 Leupolds, 1 Burris, 1 Scopechief and 1 Weaver Classic.
