This is supposed to be the high desert but in the last few weeks we've had almost 5" of rain. A lot of the hay got wet, some of it VERY wet and the grain is molding and sprouting in the head.

Some hay is selling for $150 and isn't worth half that. Good hay is going up. I've seen some for $220 and word is that it could hit 250 before long, especially after the downpour we had yesterday.

For you Bud and Coors drinkers, things are more serious. A lot of the malting barley for these 2 companies is grown here. 70 to 90% of it has deteriorated to feed grade and can't be used for brewing. You might be popping a Pabst Blue Ribbon this winter.

Never fear. Hay was good here and our barley in the valley did real well.

I gave up on Bud and Coors some time ago, primarily because they are just about flavor free.

I'll take an IPA any day over those two.

So, I'm not too concerned about wet hay, but thanks for the update.

Most of that hay goes into milk production. We have about 1/2 million dairy cows around here. Most of the milk goes into cheese and yogurt. Chobani has a huge plant here and there are cheese plants all over the place. Starting with feed costs, the ripple affect will hit the grocery stores.
