Really did not need this one, but I ordered anyway. The steel intrigued me, as I have never heard of the type or the process. link to article Spyderco�s nineteenth Mule Team Project installment features PSF27, a tool steel produced using the Spray Forming Process. Spray forming�also known as spray casting or spray deposition�begins by melting an alloy steel in an induction furnace. The molten steel is then poured through a ceramic nozzle and broken up into droplets by an array of gas jets. The droplets are accelerated by the jets to impact onto a collection surface while still in a semi-solid condition. There they build up to form a spray-formed billet, assuming the shape of the substrate surface. The small size and rapid cooling of the droplets minimizes alloy segregation to produce an extremely fine-grained homogenous steel.
PSF27 combines the advantages of the Spray Forming Process with an alloy composition (1.55% carbon, 12.00% chromium, 0.75% molybdenum, 1.00% vanadium) that is basically equivalent to D2 tool steel. The synergy of these alloys and the Spray Forming Process results in a steel that offers increased toughness, wear resistance, crack resistance, and higher hardness. It is also more predictable and dimensionally stable during the heat-treatment process.

Article says it's like D2 steel, just sprayed, not forged. I can't wait to work with it, and yeah, I'll tell y'all what I think.
Maybe I can send it to one of the real knife guys, that makes stuff with D2, and let them try it.

The PSF 27 is great stuff.
I heat treat mine to a 61 Rc and have been very pleased with the performance. It machines like powdered steels, has the toughness and edge holding like the powder steels, but retains that aggressive cutting nature like conventional D2. I have used it for a lot of bushcraft style and hunting knives and have had nothing but great reviews.
Thin the edge out a bit on the mule and you will be very pleased with what you get.

my experience with spydie mules has been very impressive but their folders in super steels from the last 3 years have really dropped in performance. t just returned one in s110v that wasnt heattreated--menefee watched me roll the edge on a few pieces of cardboard. cranky72
