Just got done burning up some Michelin tires on my Tundra and never felt I got that good of traction from them. Driving a car more and more for daily duty and thinking I'll give some all terrain tires a shot on the truck. Any reason not to run BF Goodrich All Terrains in 275/70/18? Looking for something for better rock and mud traction and decent snow traction.

Wanting to stay under $250 per tire if possible. Thoughts? Can get 4 of these for $989 out the door.

On a half ton or smaller they're fine. On anything more than a half ton, they suck ass IMO.

I have a set on my Tundra with a little over 55,000 miles on them. It looks like they will go another 5K or 10K for sure. Used them in the rocks and sand down here and in the snow and mud in Colorado and Nebraska. Had one repaired (old nail in the tread), otherwise, as tikkanut said, keep 'em aired up and rotated.

That is exactly the same tire and size we are putting on our 09 F150 very soon.

That particular size is only available in a 10 ply IIRC. A lot of guys will wrinkle their nose at a 10 ply on a half ton. My step dad sells and mounts a lot of tires, here's his take. He says the tread depth is deeper on the 10 ply, it's obviously a tougher tire, and nobody says you HAVE to run 80 psi in the damn things.

I've researched this topic a bit, and I am convinced this is the tire for our half ton, stock size for us if 275/65-18. Going to the 70 series makes the tire a bit taller without adding width, which is exactly what I'm after.

Something clever here.

I am running 10 ply, 16 inch tires on my Taco. These were recommended by the local coop. as the favorite of the local farmers. Been on a year now and I like them. miles

I have the BFG Long Trail AT's 265 70 16's on my truck.

No real problems noted on or off road, other than the tread will hold some gravel on occasion.

Seems like a solid consensus on these. Should get the Tundra up to around 180,000 with this set. Thanks again all.

All terrain tires are a compromise if you also do a lot of driving on pavement.( hence all terrain)

If you are looking for more mud/snow driving, consider a M&S tire. If a lot of ice, get them studded. For all my trucks, I get a second set of wheels. I think I paid $50/wheel at the junk yard for my wife's 2004 Tacoma. I run All Terrain in the summer and switch to M&S in the fall and run them until mid April or so. Then I can run the M&S a little longer when they worn for the summer months ,but are too worn for good winter traction.

I put Goodyear Duratracks on my Dodge Cummins and will put Coopers on my wife's Tacoma this fall.

Your M&S will be a softer tire so it might feel squishy, but M&S tires need to be softer to get better traction. A fact over looked by those who complain about the Duratracks being squishy on bends, etc.
So you initial invest may be $220 more, but you will get more use of the M&S when needed.

Well I guess I'm wrong, I assumed E rated would be a 10 ply.

These guys are wrong too then.

Summit lists them as a 3 ply sidewall, I see nothing on BFG specs that says either way.

I think the AT KO is a decent tire, but not great. I had 2 sets on my 3/4 ton GMC. They lasted about 30,000 miles. The first set had a tire that broke a belt making it out of round thus requiring the nest set.

For light snow and ice they are good, but I have switched to Kelly TSR ATs and got them studded for winter driving. I then go to Toyo MTs is the summer. Packed snow hard to get through with any AT.

For our suburban I have Firestone Destination AT and in the winter Firestone Destination MT. I have found them to be a better tire than the BFG.

I imagine he's getting at the fact that load range E tires have a 10 ply rating, not that they actually have 10 plies.
