Hi guys I'm new to the Savage 99 and don't know much about them other than they are a great lever action.

I saw a 99 at a Pawn shop the other day this was a shooter, bluing overall was very good but had some pitting on right side receiver and little on the lever, case hardening on the lever looked great other then the pitting, rear sight was missing it had weaver mount and a cheap scope.
Caliber was .243 which interested me in the rifle I have looked at many 99s over the years but never seen one in .243 serial number puts this one around 1966.

They are asking 500.00, is that too much, what's it worth?
Is 500.00 to much for this?
Thanks for any help.
JD

If you can tolerate the pitting, the price doesn't seem too far out of line. I would look online if I were you before I committed to buy that one however. It only takes a few minutes to get lots of other options, and I think you'll feel better one way or the other about your decision having done a small amount of comparison shopping. Good luck!

It would help to know the model. $500 is way steep for an E from that era. Might be OK for and F or DL if the pitting is not too serious. I would sure offer less - after all, it's a pawn shop.

Mike, I don't know that $500 is way steep for a 99E in 243. It would be to us collectors, but I think I've seen quite a few sell on gunbroker for that price range over the years. $350-$450 would be much better, but he wouldn't have to pay shipping and FFL fee for this one either.

If it's a 99E or 99C, it's not a screaming good deal but it's likely a fair market price for a 99 hunting rifle (barring significant rust or cut stock&recoil pad). If you pass this one up, you can probably find another later in the same price range on gunbroker within a few months. If it's a 99DL or 99F then it's a decent deal if you want one.

Just my opinion.

Bottom line is that it's worth whatever it's worth to you. grin The guys here will be all over the place given that you weren't able to tell us what model 99 it is. That means a lot. Then there are the guys that only look at it from a collector's point of view. wink Read what's written and weigh the good and the bad and your personal feel good point. As I said above, given the advice you'll be given here and taking that into consideration, it's worth whatever it's worth to you. If you feel good with the deal ok and if you don't that's ok too. Your money, your feel good place. If it was me, I can't deal with pitting. JMOOMV. wink grin
