I got a older friend who has no kids, and he gives me his guns. But he moved out of state and its like a 12 hr drive to get them and I jsut dont have the time. But he has some guns im interested in. (actually where I got my 99 from). He has a win mod 94 from about 1902 ish in 30-30, some win 30-06 that i want as a beater and a few more. I jsut want to know if i have to get them mailed to a ffl dealer, even if they have no papers or anytihng and they arnt coming from a ffl dealer or anytihng.

He can ship them, but they'll have to shipped TO an FFL holder near you. The FFL holder will probably charge a nominal fee.. Check with your FFL holder before he ships, because there's quite a few that don't realize that a normal person can ship long guns. They'll only accept from other FFL holders.

If they are your guns as he gave them to you and they are yours now, then ship them to yourself from his address. no ffl needed..

Hubert, can you provide a link to this? I know you know a lot more about this than I do (since you taught me most of what I know<grin>). Not that someone's likely to get caught, but if you haven't taken possession before they are shipped I think technically they have to go via FFL holder.

Not a good idea -- there are specific prohibitions and definitions that speak directly to shipping a firearm to another state (and this type of shipment is not the case where you ship to yourself in another state for hunting etc, and you are not a resident of the state you are shipping from, not to mention that you are not doing the shipping).

Take a look at www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#b9 and check out FAQ (B9). The scenario in this post is close, but not quite a cigar. It might be doable under some theory of agency, but likely not worth the risk of an embarasing boo-boo. Using an FFL licensee would be the better plan.

99 times you could probably get by with it but you don't want to be the 1 that gets nailed because it will be painful!!

Try to get a group rate with an FFL.

R300F,
Get off your donkey..... do the drive!
