Very nice looking rifle. Dont ever sell it if you can help it. I have been looking around for 1899's for awhile. I am kind of worried about buying a used rifle via the net. Therefore, I go to shows and pawn shops when I can. I found a decent one ($425) just last week after looking for about a year. I was at a show three weeks ago that had a dealer selling about six rifles like that the one you picyured. Ranged $850-$925. Crazy hugh?

Looks to be a real honest rifle...nice! BillR, note the MP stamp.

Oh! Okay, I've never seen the infamous MP stamp in person... which pic and where is it? Don't see anything obvious. We should get Les a pic of one for his web site:)

The stamp is located at the base of the bbl.

Okay, I see it now. So my understanding is that MP is mounted police. But beyond that, I dont know much. Anyone on here have info about these, i.e. how many of them are out there?, does it affect value? Thanks a bunch. Dave

Call me what you want but there ain't enough Canucks in the MP's back then to even consider those guns "mounted police" rifles.
I wish we could really get to the bottom of these.

So was that a term coined by the fourm? Kind of like a guess? Or is there some documentation of these rifles?

They are mentioned and pictured in the book...'arms and accoutrements of the mounted police'.I believe they were sold to an arms surplus in the USA.No serial # list has appeared to date.
