anybody have velocities to go with their loads? I am thinking that for a guy who likes to use a little bit bigger bullet but wants to have at least 2600 fps out of the muzzle it would be pretty hard to beat the .35 Whelan as a medium range all around rifle using a 200-225 grain bullet. Great deer rifle if you don't need to shoot over a couple hundred yards! I get 2710 FPS from my custom Mauser with 24" barrel using 60.4 gr. Re15 and the Barnes 225gr. TSX. Brass is Remington with Winchester WLR primers. CAUTION: This load is near maximum in my custom Mauser but is too hot in my Ruger M77 or Remington M700 Classic. Very accurate though with groups running .50 to .75". I've dropped three elk so far with the longest shot at 350 yards. Paul B. PJ Very interesting. Could you please describe the symptoms that caused you to diagnose the load as too hot in your Ruger and Remington rifles but not in your custom mauser rifle. (You must really like the 35 Whelan to have 3 of them!!!) Yes, I eally do like the .35 Whelen. When a load locks up the bolt (Remington)or gives stiff opening (Ruger) then the load is too hot.Primers in loads fired in the Mauser though are are nice and round, case head expansion it normal as it the pressure ring. Anddid I say I really like the Whelen? Paul B.

I love my Whelen. Mine is a Remington 700 Classic. Mine likes the 225 gn Sierras over 4064 best. I found some reloader 15 this summer I plan to try. Mine shot all the factory loads I tried well 200 to 250 gn. I've never recovered a bullet from an animal yet. I like 2 holes. I just wish I had a better stock of 225 gn bullets.

My Whelen seems to shoot very well with all pointed bullets. It just does not like the 200 gr. Round noses, probably because of the long throat. My favorite powders are 4320 and 3031. All bullets from the 200 gr. Hornady spire point to the 250 gr. Nosler, Hornady and Speers have performed perfectly. The 220 gr. Speer flat nose has also done well when pushed to 2500 fps.

I used hornady 180 sspb interlocks with varget never had a deer take a step after impact.
It is better to have it and not need it , than to need it and not have it ( by master gunsmith & very wise friend )
