Other than my Colt AR, I never spent more than $200 for a rifle or scope. For 30+ years that Rem.788 and Burris scope just kept piling them up.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

My idea of cheap is old, mildly used. Most hunting rifles are fired very little and as long as the bores aren't pitted, they shoot just fine. A little JB to get the copper out and you'd be surprised how good a 60-some year old rifle will shoot. They may be a little heavy and a bit scarred, but so am I.
Old scopes, on the other hand, often aren't up to snuff.
What fresh Hell is this?

Killed a couple deer with an old beat up Marlin 44 mag, iron sights. But that was years ago. A favorite of mine was a Savage 110 lefty in 30-06 with Tasco Scope, That I paid $200. for. Killed a few deer and elk with it. Wish I still had it. Would be a nice back up rifle. I'd change the scope though to a vintage Weaver or something, just to make it classy.

Thanks!................ Stick, it was a used Rem.788(.308) with Red Field scope base and rings, Burris Full Field scope(the early ones,3x9-34?) and Speer 150 gr BT. During the off season I shot thousands of mil. sup. FMJs through it until I could only seat bullets to fit the mag. It still shot into less than an inch.

What do you figure it weighed?................. Don't know, don't care. I do know the tenderloins were awesome that night. 4 minutes a side at 400 degrees. Some mushrooms and onions sauteed in butter, Texas toast and a salad = dinner. But it was a tad over 70 yards with a Ruger SBH sporting a Leupold FX-II fixed 2x scope, flinging a 240g Hornady XTP with a stout charge of W296.

You could drive a yugo and get where you're going.. Then there are guys on this forum that their personalities are like owning a Yugo....nothing you'd be proud of and hopefully your friends won't hold against you.... But then again, you could put oversized rims with spinners on it with skinny tires and there would be someone in the ghetto who thinks it is cool... Moral of the story.... IN Oakland there is a guy somewhere who thinks you are really COOL there Rauncho...
