I was at a little gun show today and picked up a 19. My question for the Savage gurus is two parts. First, when did serial numbers start being applied(this one is without)and secondly what is the proper clip for a 19? This has an eight or ten round clip with no markings. Thanks in advance and have a great holiday!

They are all serialed. The early ones have the serial stamped on the backend of the receiver...look around the edge of the receiver where you insert the bolt. I can tell you more when you locate the serial. It's was probably made 1923 or earlier.
If your magazine has no markings it's probably a replacement.

As Rick99 said. Original mags hold five rounds and early ones have a flared nob that screws into the bottom. Take a look an ebay for pictures and prices of Model 19 magazines. They can be spendy!
