But you do like the scopes Texans sell At times I wish for some of that Alaskan wet weather...like when taking a stroll in the woods it would be nice to have soft, wet, quiet grass. Instead we get crunch, crunch with every step, walking on usually-dry grass and dead weeds. Punctuated with occasional "chits!" as we bump into an unseen cactus To the thread at hand, one of the rifles I'll hunt this year is a sporterized Mauser in .25-06, which I'm told Dad bought in the 60's off a coworker who needed money. It has a 26" heavy barrel of uncertain origin, and an old Weaver scope. It has plenty of quirks, but it was a rifle that fascinated me as a kid, so we'll see if it can be made to run.

Reading this forum, one might get the impression that you simply cannot hunt successfully without a certain brand and model of rifle and scope. I exclusively muzzle-loaded for deer for about 10 years. When the opportunity presented itself to rifle hunt private land, I decided that a "beater" would be a good idea. 220 bucks for a Mossberg 100-ATR (.270 even), a Weaver Grand Slam 4.75 fixed scope I had lying around, and some Warne rings that were lying around in the same box, and I went hunting. Somehow, despite the obvious disadvantages when compared to all the "better" rifles, scopes, and calibers out there, after shooting at a dozen or so deer, it has yet to miss a deer, or require two shots on one. How can that possibly be??? Do any of you other guys actually go and kill stuff, grill it, and eat it, without using the forum's "preferred" boutique rifle and scope combo? Heck, reading this forum, you'd think shoot'n a deer with a pistol would be dang near impossible.... One can successfully hunt without any rifle or handgun, so skill of the hunter will always trump any particular brand and model of rifle and scope. You, spending 10 years with the self-imposed limitations of a muzzle loader, and becoming successful, would make evident that ones skill as a hunter are such to take maximum advantage of limitations in range, and to make best use of the single shot that is immediately available. Removing those limitations from that same hunter would likely not result in the hunter becoming careless with that first shot. Regardless of weapon, the same skilled hunter would likely continue to make best use of that first shot to make it count. I recall mornings small game hunting with a grandparent as a child when I was given one shot. If I managed to make it count, the hunt continued. But if I wasted that shot, wed pack it in. So I learned to make each and every shot count, regardless how clunky the weapon. Decades ago, but as an adult at Quantico, in honor of Carlos Hathcock, his son was given a spot on the team, but he was having difficulty. Sure enough, the technique employed by the Marines were to have him spend all morning setting up for his shot, but he only had one single live cartridge to fire on his target. So in this training, he learned to make it count. So, when I read your post, I didnt take it as an example and showcase of a particular rifle and scope, be it cheap or spendy. I take it as an example and showcase of a hunter. Best

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

And too, Gee, you can do it pretty much year around. You don't have to huddle next to the stove 9 months out of the year and vent your frustrations by trashing everybody else.
Aim for the exit hole.

I'd hang with you 'dubya! No kidding. Thanks guys, maybe we will get the chance. Got two active duty Army guys that are stationed here that are heading up with me the 13th through the 16 this month. Hope to put them on some hoglets, doves, maybe some coons, bunnies, Rib-eyes Fajitas, tamales, frijoles, brewskis and tequila, good tunes and good times. Best, GWB
