Preach it, Peter!

I have .177 cal. RWS Diana Model 24 that I use to brush up on my trigger skills with. It is only pushing the 7 gr. Beeman pellets at 260fps, so trigger control and follow-through becomes extremely critical if I want to hit my target. grin

It's pretty sad to see these prices. I remember 22LR for $0.99/box and I'm pretty young yet. $5.50 seems criminal...especially for non match stuff.

I can run into a brick here and there for $25. A nickel a shot is still pretty tough, but doable.

The worst of this all is when I see stories of 4H clubs and the like not being able to do their normal training due to the cost/availability of 22LR. That's pretty sad, to me.

The last gun show I was at a guy had a stack of Blazers on the table, asking price was only $10 a box!

I did manage to find a few boxes of Blazer at Academy for 2.99 a box, limit two. And then I hit the jackpot and found a brick at Cabela's for $28.

I have had grandkids that would run through a brick in an afternoon, when it was slightly different priced.
Now back in the dark ages, i was never given that luxury. I was usually handed maybe a box, and I had to account for the rounds with dead rabbits etc. I am sure i was not the only one.

It is especially hard for me to pay today's inflated .22 prices, when I started shooting as a junior I paid .50 cents a box for Remington Standard Velocity that the gun club purchased from the DCM program. Centerfire ammo was $5.00 bx. and most gunshops had fish bowls on the counter with birdshot, buckshot & slugs available by the shell. Those were the days I guess.

If I could hit a squirrel with a bow, I would buy another one! How accurate are crossbows? I guess it would be pretty expensive losing crossbow bolts. Digital Dan once proposed using a flintlock rifle. Might be cheaper than rimfire ammo these days!

I was at the LGS this afternoon and they had plenty of Fed. Auto Match- $19, CCI Std Vel-$4 and Fed 510-$3 bx.
Wal-Mart here has a good supply of Remington and Fed bulk packs.
They seem to stay in stock for about 24hrs now.
It is getting better.

A quality air rifle is the answer, although not cheap..With a good PCP, I would think 40yard shots on squirrels and rabbits would be more than feasible..

I was waiting in line behind a guy that had a 500 round brick he was going to buy but when the clerk rang it up at $27.95 he said, "I think I'll just put it back; I don't want it that bad."

What's bad is that I have a PCP, but it's leaking from both valves. When it was operating it was a squirrel killer to fifty yards. Plenty of power past that range, but not enough accuracy to consistently make properly placed shots.

Do you leave it without much air in the cylinder? Apparently many designs will suffer leaking valves if the pressure it too low. On some, once that stage is reached, you then can't charge them up again, without first taking additional steps to get the valves to hold air again..

I haven't bought a box of .22 since the panic started..actually have about 40 rounds which will last me a long time since I now shoot breakbarrel pellet rifles. This HW95Luxus .22cal. is very accurate. Got a Crosman Nitro Venom .22cal. I can't say the same about..just work on it for a habit. Also have another HW30S .22cal. on the way that should be here tomorrow.

I've killed quiet a few squirrels with the HW95L this season.

I am thinking your 24 is sick as it should be launching those pellets at 2 1/2 times that speed. Is that a typo?

The panic will be back. These may be the good old days.

Bought a case of the good stuff from a UK company not that long ago, and for not much more. If the guy offers another case will buy it also.

...and yet IIRC the cost of dove loads for shotguns in 12 and 20 ain't gone up a whole lot.
