That sucks. Sounds like he was probably on cloud nine before the fall.

I've climbed North Maroon Peak three times and never saw any goats. It would be easy to fall if you got distracted. I guess his number was up. Hope he died happy.

PassCreek: Thanks for passing the link along. A lesson here for all of us that enjoy Mt. Goat Hunting. May this Hunter rest in peace. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

You can die with bed sores, wearing a diaper, confused and alone for your last number of years, or get your frigging head chopped off by radical Muslim scumbags in the Middle East.
To die in the field after a successful kill is not such a bad way to my way of thinking.
I would rather go down enjoying something or doing battle to protect those I care about than waste away lying in my own filth.

Yep, worse ways to go. That said, I'd never chase goats solo.

This happened a month or so ago.

One more reason to not carry 100 lbs in your pack.

One more reason to not carry 100 lbs in your pack. Yeah, maybe in your 20's, but not in those kind of mountains, and not at my age. Died with his boots on.

Sorry to hear...wish the best for his survivors. Me too on both counts. I didn't mean to be disrespectful with the remark about the heavy pack, that's just the lesson I took away from this, and hopefully it won't be lost on people--a heavy pack can knock you off-balance in a flash. I hope he didn't suffer.

This happened a month or so ago. It was posted a month or so ago. Sucks, but there's a whole lot worse ways to go.

Three ascents for me too. I never saw goats there either. I read somewhere once that the Maroon Bells have claimed the lives of more climbers than all of the other 14,000ft peaks in Colorado combined. The Bells are extremely steep rotten rock. One of the last places that I would ever want to attempt to descend hauling an animal.

I bet Long's is a close second, seems like you read about someone getting killed there almost every year.

Mountain goat hunting is a dangerous hunting goal. It is a true adventure, but difficult hunt, that can be full filling and at times not advisable. There is no good way to pass on, yet one with adventure, hunting and giving ones all can be a way to exit this life. I/we are keeping a good thought for his family.
