I came across a real beaut made in 1948 and had to have it. Not a safe queen, not beat to hell, just right.

I recall reading that they didn't start drilling and tapping the receiver until the early 1950's and the pictures I saw of the rifle before I got looked right, no holes. When I picked it up today, I was expecting to see a filler screw in the tang for a peep, but no bueno. Was there a period where Winchester did not drill and tap the tang leading up to drilling and tapping the receiver?

I am slightly bummed as I was hoping to mount a period correct peep, but I guess it is what it is and open sights will have to do.
