To buy or not to buy? That is the question 7yr/125K Toyota Platinum coverage, info can be found here. Can get for as low as $1174 Bought a SR5 premium with 3rd row seats as the kids get bigger. Lots of electronics that may be expensive if they break. I know it's just an insurance policy, but wondering some others thoughts and opinions. Thanks

Toyotas are pretty darn reliable...
they market that stuff due to the profit potential... consumers buy it for 'peace of mind'...
its your money, so I don't want to spend or not spend it for you...myself, I'd pass on it...

Well, it depends I suppose. It's about the cost of a set of tires, and for the peace of mind it may be worth it. Traditionally, you won't need a warranty until after the 125k miles are up.
My '97 4Runner went almost 250k before anything serious.

Toyota is betting you, your $1174 that you will not need it, you are betting that you will need more than $1174

I'd be more inclined to not buy the extended warranty. Sell or trade the vehicle off every three or four years, and don't worry about it.

This is for a new vehicle? If so it's really just for the >3 to 7 year period, you already have the 3 yr coverage. I never get extended warranties, no regrets yet either.

Generally, extended warranties cover the period in the life of an item when it's LEAST apt to break. If it was defective from the factory, it'll show up under the original warranty. If it wears out, it's after the extended warranty runs out. It's a major money maker for the insurers.

Thanks I've got 215,000 miles on my Toyota Tundra and I have spent $0 on mechanical repairs. It's all just been maintenance. timing belt, water pump, timing belt again, shocks, brakes, fluid changes. TBS, I've got a check engine light for a sensor that I haven't ponied up the $450 to replace, but it's been that way for over 120,000 miles. I'd put the money in the bank. I've never heard of major mechanical issues with Toyotas (in that mileage range) when properly maintained.

First of all, be sure the warranty is offered by a company that's been around a while, and will BE around for a while.
Dealer markup on extended warranties is generally 100%. If you really want the peace of mind, offer them 50% of their asking price, plus $50 or $100, and see if they go for it. You can point out to them that a li'l bit o' something, is better than a whole lot o' nothing.
I wouldn't buy it on a Toyota, but that's me.

Invest the $1174 and have it available if and when you need it.
Most likely things will break under the factory warranty, or past the extended warranty. They'll try like heck to get you to buy the extended warranty, but IMHO it's a waste of money.

If I do, it will be the Toyota one as they cover towing from wherever to a dealership. $1174 is a slight bit over cost best I can tell, most places here have offered it for $1900-2200 for the 7/125. Guy in Kansas sells a ton, just have to have someone in Wichita sign the document and put in the mail to me. I'm leaning away from it, but haven't fully decided yet, lots o electronics in there that can get pricey if they break, but that's the bet! Thanks

I have 200K on a 2008 4runner and I haven't needed a single repair. They're pretty reliable.

Had a friend that bought a certified Toyota Seqoia used and bought the extended warranty. A few years later transmission failed, same dealer said they'd replace transmission as Toyota would only replace whole unit, not repair. ....but warranty would only warranty repairs NOT replacement of the transmission. He ended up getting his money back after threatening lawsuit.
