I tried shooting full loads with 60g Sierra and my son thought it was rather loud. I am going to load the Horn 100gr and/or Sierra 85gr to develop a load for deer season. I want to try some reduce load and see if this works better for him. Note this rifle is the Ruger American Youth (Compact) and the 18" barrel does make a difference. Not sure why Ruger went with this length of barrel. While in Wally World I saw a M700 ADL Youth with 20" barrel for $377 but....I got this Ruger and want to see if reduced load works for him. I did a search and did not find any reduced loads. I mention Hornady 100gr and Sierra 85gr but I also have a couple Speer 6mm boxes...bullet weight weight I forgot off the top of my head. Speer lists powder for reduced loads but I do not have that powder. Appreciate if you give me reduced loads with other powders. Thanks.

You could try Hornady Custom Lite loads for the .243. On sale with good reviews at Cabelas. If they work for your son you could then reload a similar load.

30 grains of IMR 4198 or H 4198, with bullets from 85 to 100 grains...RL 7 can also work just fine....

I load this stuff every year for a Disabled Navy Vet buddy, and he has used this effectively to 200-250 yds with great success...

want to go lighter, his son had used the same load, but 25 grains when he was younger ( 12 to 14 range)...

Remington uses 4198 for their "Managed Recoil" loads...

Cast bullet manuals are a good source of info for this application also...

26gr 4895
87gr Hornady SP
CCI-200
COL 2.750"
2320fps from a 22" Handi-Rifle

Very good accuracy and kills deer out to 100ds with no problems for my grandson. Havn't tried it further out.

Used Seafire's recommendation last year for my 10yo and settled on a 85hpbt over 28gr of imr4198.
