I have been considering a shotgun scope, like the Nikon 2-7x32, for my 1895 45-70. Anyone tried this or anything like it and if so what was the result? I am thinking the shorter scope may mount a little better and should handle the recoil.

The differences are typically that the shotgun scope has a heavier reticle and parallax is set at 75 yards or so.
I used a 1-4X20 Leupold shotgun scope on a .308 carbine without issue.

Thanks for the input. I have read where shotgun scopes can have a little more eye relief as well. Don't know that for sure but I think its worth checking it out.

It'll work fine. Have a turkey scope on mine and it works great for me. The longer eye relief helps also.

Ive been using a cabelas shotgun scope on my 1895 guide gun . I figured with the short range shots available here in the big woods,a shorter parallax surely wont hurt. and the low power, wide angle field of view is nice ,too.

I had a cheap 2.5X Simmons shotgun scope on my 1895G and could cut 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards with boring consistency. The eye relief was such that it facilitated both eyes open shooting. I loved that set-up, but my shoulder is too damn bad these days.

Got a VX-II 2-7x33 Shotgun with #4 on my 336 in .35 Rem. Really like this set up in the woods.

I wrote this post once already but apparently it didn't go. Anyway, I purchased a Nikon 2-7x32 from someone on the classifieds forum. Mounted it on the rifle now need to find time to get to the range and sight it in.

bob,
That should work fine. I just put a Monarch 2-7x32 on my new to me Savage 99 in .375 Win. simply because I already had it.

I prefer low-power fixed scopes on my rifles and, in new scopes, those are mostly "shotgun scopes." The one problem I have with them is that they are less compact than the old fixed, straight tube scopes like the Weaver K-1.5X and the Leopold 2.5 Compact. But they work the same way--simple, tough, clear, and long eye relief.
Put a Burris 1.75X shotgun scope on my Savage/Valmet .308x12 guage combination gun and it works just great for both barrels (Thanks, Bruce!). Rifle recoil, on a scope meant for 12 guage slugs, is NOT a problem...

I just put a old Weaver K3 on a .357. It has the post with a cross-wire. Works great. May have to try one of those Leupold 2.5's someday.
