150 vs 180 gr.? Longest likely shot not more than 100 yds. in open woods and brush lots. Deer weights about 130-150#.

Trading a really nice 99 for some Jeep body work by BIL. He's an experienced hunter, but always hunted 'em with shotgun/slugs.

TIA,

Al

Factory ammo? At those distances, either will work fine.

I'm guessing most will prefer the 150 grain on that size of deer. Most of my hunting is done at that range too. I just like the 180s myself. Personal preference.

Find what shoots best in that 99 and go kill stuff. cool

I've always been a middle of the road guy. I reload 165's. BUT if I shoot factory it's 150 grain corelokt.

Whatever the gun likes. My EG loves 180gr Partitions, so I use them a lot since my shots are under 150 yds.

For deer you might even try 125-130 grainers.

Factory ammo? If so, give the 150 grain blue box Federals a look.

Green Box - 150 grain corelokt. Don't need cryptonite to kill a whitetail.

For handloading it's easy. Just about any 150 grain bullet and 4895 will do nicely.

I like the 150gr ballistic tip on top of 4320. That bullet is pretty tough at the speeds attainable in the 300. I have shot them through shoulders and not had any blown up bloodshot wreckage. Hornady 150 interlocks shoot to the same poi in my 99 but can create a mess when you run them into bone.

That's why I sling Barnes, not much mess and deer seem a bit more impressed with the velocity.

But you do need a bullet that can get past the shoulder.

180 grain Corlokt. I even use them when I reload. Not a fan of WALMART, but was in there a few months ago. The green and yellow ammo shelves were empty. There was still a good amount of Federal and Winchester (With hybrid bullets) sitting on the shelves. I have not even been able to order a couple different caliber Corlokt bullets for over a year.

22 mag is the local poachers cartridge of choice. So likely anythin g in 300 Savage will take out Bambi. Seems they always have deer meat in the freezer. GW

What load do you use with the 130tsx? I would like to give them a shot, that much speed kinda turns the 300 into a whole nother animal I would imagine.
