Does anyone use this for their phone service?? Almost sounds too good to be true.

I don't. The major drawback, apparently, is that it does not report your location in a 911 call.

RS308MX, I did about 2 years ago. It works ok, but after my 1 year service they double your yearly fee. Also, you have to have your computer turned on to use it. Ive heard they have a new one out that will work with your computer shut down, but ive not tried it. But when I had it, it worked ok as far as connection and sound goes.

My sister uses it and swears by it. She has the new one that runs off the router (or maybe it's the modem, not sure) so the computer doesn't have to be on. It saves them a lot of money and the service is very good.
It's true that they can't locate you for a 911 call but neither can cell phones.
However, my mother, who lives in an apartment in my sister's house, has one of those 911 alert things that she wears because she falls occasionally. They had to get her a regular phone line because it won't work with Magic Jack.
We haven't gone to Magic Jack because our DSL line is through our local phone co. The FCC won't let them offer the internet service unless we have a land line.

There has been a lot of complaints about Magic Jack overseas customer service. Our friends have had few problems and have stayed with MJ for years.
magicJack: $49.95 ($39.95 plus $10 shipping and handling) startup cost (includes one year of service), plus the cost of a phone handset; $19.95 per year thereafter; estimated total after five years $130. magicJackGO: $59.95 upfront for device and 6 months of service $19.95 number transfer fee and $9.95 annual charge after first year

A friend has one of those dang things, I can never contact him when I need to because the phone doesn't work when someone in the home is on the computer.

I tried it. They have a terrible lag and were not reliable. People would call, and the calls would not come through. After a few months I went back to a regular landline for my home phone.

I use it as an answering service. It sends me an email notification whenever someone leaves a message.
So far so good.

Bob Boy, this thread has nothing to do with what I was thinking. When I read the thread title, I immediately thought of a quaint little massage parlor run by a nice group of Japanese ladies down in Tampa. Ah, the Magic Jack.....

I work in Thailand and use on a regular basis. If you have good internet speed, it works great. I have an app on my Iphone and talk like regular service. It also picks up your contacts so you don't have to re-enter.

If you want rid of paying for your home phone service, just go to Amazon and buy an Obi100. I have used one for years, it provides totally free home phone service. Better than Comcast and Verizon home phone service by far. I have gotten dozens of people using these now. I can't believe people still pay for home phone service.
