I have seen guys at the range shooting very small groups at the 200 yard targets using .308s but the 7-08 seems only average.
Is that the way these two calibers shake out in the accuracy department for you?

Neither. Both.
It's a toss up. Depends on gun/shooter....

I imagine there are more dedicated target rigs in 308, which may skew the perception of the 308. I've certainly had accurate examples of each.

Nope
Caliber does not equate accuracy

I have shot each very well. It all depends on the gun, load, and shooter.

308, although the 7mm-08 isn't far behind. The 308 has been used as the primary sniping rifle for the U.S. military and others around the world for a reason. I believe the research and development of .30 caliber bullets also contribute to the "inherent" accuracy of the 308 winchester which could be said about any caliber? That's not to say a 7mm-08 could not out shoot the 308 but I would always lean towards the 308 for accuracy.

.308 is definitely the most accurate and hits harder too.

Depends on the rifle and shooter which is the best, but my vote would go with the 308 winning in a shoot out
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

You mean "inherent accuracy" is a myth?? It's a nice selling point gun writers wear out but bullet design lends more to inherent accuracy then cartridge design This being said........grain for grain a .284 has better BC then the .308 There are far more choices in .308 Win OTC ammo so 7-08 shooters are limited Just one more great reason to handload.......and there are many

My brother's .308 in a Savage 99 lever action shoots tighter groups than his Savage 110 bolt action 7 RM.
Maybe the reason people build target rifles in this caliber is because they are easy to tune a load for accuracy. When the 7/08 was a new round I remember reading they were popular with the silhoutte competition shooters. So they must have be good too.

You mean "inherent accuracy" is a myth?? Not so much a myth as not significant enough to matter. Additionally shorter cartridges is one of the things that is supposed to create better inherent accuracy, and they both run on the same case.
If you love someone set them free If they come back no one else liked them Set them free again

My experience having owned several of each is that the .308 tends to be more accurate.

The 7mm starts to have accuracy issues up in the mag region.... thats been proven, with an erratic flyer now and then at long range.
Beyond that I've shot a few 308s over the years and only a couple 7/08s.
The 7/08s were more finicky about getting right reloading, whereas the 308 seemed to almost want to be nice with about anything you fed it to an extent.
Being the same case I would think the 7/08 could equal the 308 given enough work or luck though. It shoudl be the same as the PPC case basis.....
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

Taking my experience as the deciding factor, I've had far more luck with the .308 and accuracy. I've never owned a 7-08... In all honesty, it would be more determined by the quality of the rifle/components rather than the caliber. A well built/loaded 7-08 will outshoot a crappy .308, and vice-versa.

This is almost as entertaining as 280 Rem vs. 270 Win.

.308 is more accurate. I have targets to prove it.
