Well, I finally found a Lyman sight for this 99R of mine, but I have discovered a clearance problem. The offset from the tang-mound holes is insufficient to clear the wood at the tang. Is there something unique about the width of the wood on the 99R? [img][image] http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j243/nairbg/Lymansightinterference1.jpg[/img][/image]

I have seen a rifle were the wood was cut to solve that problem. The other part of the story is the man who owned this rifle was selling it for $850. Sorry that this reply does not help you. Just had to comment on it. Jeff

Are you left handed? Most are mounted on the left side of the gun. Don't know if it makes a difference.

Ditto Wes's reply, you have it pointed the wrong way, may make a difference in the offset. I have three of this same sight mounted and mine all had good clearence, though mine are on EG's not R's.

Turn it around. It fits a lot better when you mount it correctly. It mounts with the scale on the Remington side, not the Mauser side.

The problem is that you are attempting to mount the sight backwards. There is no need to remove wood when the sight is mounted correctly. When correctly mounted the slide will be on the left side of the rifle and the sighting oriface will be looking straight at the front sight, not up in the air as would be the case if the sight were mounted backwards. If all else fails read the instructions. Contact Lyman and request instruction sheet.

Thanks guys...... it fits better when you point it the right way!
I promise that I won't make the same mistake the first time I pull the trigger!
