All,

I've been loading the 110gr. Sierra Prohunter bullet for antelope and was originally thinking of a 130gr. Hornady for her first elk hunt. A hunting buddy asked me why not the 110 TTSX. It can be loaded to 3200fps and should have plenty of punch to her max range of 250 yards. Anybody have experience with that bullet on an elk?

Thanks for you replies,

Elk Country

I was able to surpass 3400fps with no over-pressure signs in my 23" Hart barreled .270 Win. 3200fps would seem to be fairly conservative in my rifle.

Captain,

What was your load for 3400? I'm sure I could do better than 3200. I just wanted to keep the load on the lighter side for lighter recoil and to reduce the muzzle blast a bit.

Thanks again,
Elk Country

I used Ramshot Hunter listed in Barnes Bullets load data. They show 63.5 gr. as max. for 3524 fps in a 24" bbl. I got 3450-3475 fps according to my Oehler on two outings but think my accuracy node was around 63.0 grs. I have not hunted with it at all.

elkcountry,

Don't have any experience with the 110 .270 TTSX on elk, but last month was standing beside my wife whens she dropped a cow with one 100-grain TTSX from a .257 Roberts, using a basic lung shot. Hope that helps.

MD,

I read your thread on Eileen's elk taken with the 257 and the 100TSX. It really made think that a 110gr Barnes from her 270 will work fine. I was thinking about limiting her to 250 yards. What does Eileen feel is her limit on elk with the 257 Roberts?

120 grain TTSX out of a 260 Remington last year put a cow elk down at 220 yards, shot in the center of her chest....

My son's current elk load is a 110 grain Accubond from his 270 winchester at about 3300 (these bullets are designed for the 6.8 IIRC). Didn't get a shot at an elk this year, but did a fine job on a mule deer.

elkcountry,

I don't know what Eileen feels her limit is on elk with the .257/100 TTSX. If you're really curious could ask her, but would guess she'd say about the same as on any other big game, around 300 yards. She's shot steel out to 700, but these days doesn't like going beyond 300 on game, even though she's done it in the past with no problems.
