John, a couple threads have raged over whether the .204 or the .223 is mo' beta with 40 grainers in it.
I don't give a schitt cause you talked me into a .204 which I love, but Im thinking of shooting some 40s in a .223 and wondered if they were as good in the wind as the 40 gr. .204?

Ing, haven't tried the 40 grain Noslers, but the 40 gr V-Max in the .204 is SERIOUS rockchuck medicine...
My .223 is an AR-15 and thrives on heavier bullets.

No, the 40-grain .224 plastic-tips aren't as good in the wind as the 40 .204's, but out to 250 or maybe 300 yards there isn't enough difference to notice. Beyond that the drift of the .204 is noticeably less.

Yeah, they will drift less than a 40-grain .204 V-Max. But the 40 V-Max from a .204 beats any of the 55-60 grain plastic tips from the .223 in wind-drift.
The other thing I like about the .204 is the trajectory is considerably flatter at typical PD ranges. This isn't supposed to matter if we're lasering the range and twisting turrets, but what I've noticed is on flat PD towns the range isn't as easily or accurately ranged, so the flatter trajectory still helps. Especially when there's a cluster of dogs within 20 yards or so of each other, as they often are.

But that's why they make 75 A-Maxes..... That's a good way to roll. Shoot 40s until the close dogs go down, then transition to 75s, or just start out with 75s if the wind is really rocking. A few clicks takes care of the zero. Though a guy could build a fast twist 20 to take advantage of the Berger 55s, and really stretch the caliber's capabilities.

If you run the numbers on a 40-grain V-Max from a .204 at 3800 and a 75-grain A-Max at 2800 from a .223, you'll find the difference in wind-drift at 500 yards is about 2-1/2 inches, during typical Montana prairie dog shooting conditions of 70 degrees at 3500 feet above sea level.

About what I expected, and since it would be used more on gophs than PDs the 200-300 Yard ranges are realistic.

Just remember, lots of 204's are 1-12" twist, which can be a problem with 20 caliber 'heavies' (read 40gr plastic tips)
A 1-10 twist would be more better. I have no need for a 1-12" twist 204

Well, we figured it would in Van Horn, but not in Sonora.....  No worries anyway, next time I go to Texas Ill be toting the 1 in 8.....
