Sound advice on the spike if it's legal. He didn't say where he was hunting, but since he's from CO I'll just throw in that spikes don't meet the antler point restrictions in most GMUs here.

No spikes in CO. They are not "antlerless" and do not have minimum 5" brow tines. They don't fit the legal categories.

Enjoy the hunt, Phil. Later season hunts often find the cows and small bulls bunched up in large groups. I used to get into groups of 200-500 in the later seasons where I hunt. Since the state has been issuing so many cow and ES tags there, the numbers are much lower. Still often find groups of 100 or more. I hunt them the same as a single. Downwind, slow movements, don't show full profile, get close, shoot the one away from the group. Works every time.

If it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

One point to add that hasn't been touched on here. Find out if the rancher has a preference of what you do, how you hunt, and what you take.

Many of my friends have elk on their ranches. Most of them, when they invite people on, they do it for a reason, they want some elk down and dead. One of my best friends whose ranch I shot my cow on earlier this year probably will not allow the bowhunters that have hunted this ranch for years back next year because they got picky and held off shooting even with multiple opportunities because they wanted a bull.

So, find out how they would like you to proceed. Also, when in Rome... Find out also, how he wants you to hunt. And do your best to abide by that.
