Son took his first buck yesterday - a decent 5 pointer at 25 yards with Grampa's Marlin 336 in .30-30 just 1/4 mile from where grampa grew up. I was with my dad when he bought the rifle in about 1973, seems like he paid around $70 or that's what I remember, could be wrong, its been a while. The rifle has been loaned to lots of relatives who shot there first deer with it, including me. I would guess something upwards of 40 deer have been dispatched with it. Now my son has inherited it. The .30-30 is just as effective as always with any of the old fashioned cup and core bullets. It just works. No fuss, just bang, and start gutting.
Pretty fun to see the next generation enjoy the 'old' stuff.

absolute requirement

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Great story. I have a Marlin 336 30-30 and have never hunted with it (shotgun zone) but I sure would like to kill something with it someday.

I got my first two deer with a 30-30 like that, good ole Marlin.

My dad gave it to me when I was about eight years old. Gee, I've had that rifle for fifty years.
