the reason I decided to chase them wasn't so much with the idea that I would catch them, it was more to see what was on top of the hill and where they might be headed.

Oh, wait, my son-in-law was using the Savage I gave him as a wedding present on this year's elk hunt. I , too, was loaded with 180g bullets. Unfortunately he didn't take the shots that were offered and went home empty handed.

Congrats on your first elk! I expect you're hooked fair and good now.
