If only it could tell some tales of the hunts its been on. I bet there is a lot of history to this rifle. Congratulations on your find.

Thanks Jeff. I'm still blown away with the amount of case colour and bluing and just how tight the rifle remains after 100 years - # 172XXX. The gentleman who bought it initially took good care of this rifle for many a year.

Yeah, I've seen several old rifles with copper front sight blades. Seems to have been a common practice.

Thanks guys. Mike, the Chapleau area from which this gun came has the one of the world's largest game preserve. The gun was a functional tool for a working man [it was a family member who sold me his grandfather's rifle.] The privilege/honor feels the same as when I bought my first real bird gun - a 1913 AH Fox 16 gauge Sterlingworth. It's a piece of wood and steel that holds the promise of game and the nostalgia of its years. The best part of the night was when my youngest son took a look at it after it was all polished up and asked me if it was going to be his gun.

Yes Joe just north of you. But you know yah can't own them all... The gentleman's family contacted a local gun shop over a year ago who then served as an intermediary for the transaction. I was asked to offer a price which was eventually accepted. I paid my price. You can figure out what I paid for it. One oddity. There is a small single hole drilled [like a pilot hole] into the butt stock where one might place a sling swivel but may have been used to oil the stock as it is TOO small for a screw hole. Ever see anything like that before with a local rifle, Joe?

No, never saw anything like that before, can't see it being a sling stud hole if there is no evidence of anything on the barrel or forearm. Gotta love a mystery.

The checkering is only sharp on one side of the rifle. Strangely the other side has been flattened down by sanding. Here are detailed images of the finer points of the rifle. The walnut stocks still show the red stain used during that period: The cross-checkered trigger only on the model 250-3000: The "H" stamped on the boss: One little peened penny sight:
