Finally marked an item of my bucket list. A Drilling.
It is a 16/16/9.3x72R made by a certain Gerhard Schneiwind in Braunsweig Germany.
The shop said it was a transitional piece made possibly in the late 20's to early 30's. Underlever w/hammers that is showing her age but still ready to please.

I am running the standard S&B commercial 193 grain rifle load but my question is should I only use light 16 gauge loads such as 7 1/2 and 8 shot or since it is Nitro proofed could I run some slugs or #4 in it also.

Check your chamber lengths more than likely they are 65mm/2.5", if it isn't marked 70mm(2.75) it is most likely 65mm. Also measure your chokes, many of these had full and full in them. Brenneke is importing 16a 2.5" slugs that are made to work in Full chokes. Shot size doesn't make much difference, shooting heavy field loads 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 oz 2.75" can be hard on a hundred year old gun especially with soft old oil soaked wood. Low pressure loads are available from RST and Classic Doubles.
I find 3/4 oz ITX loads to work well on waterfowl and 7/8 oz lead loads on pheasants and sharptails.

Enjoy your old gun, I'm going to be gunning coyotes most of the winter with one.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

THX for the info. I am going to run only game loads with 2 1/2 drams to be safe.
I also discovered last night the gun is a Gebruder Schneiwind not Gerhard. Gebruder translates as Brothers.
Good possibility it is a Suhl made gun bought by them for aftermarket embellishment and sale. Probably a pre war gun maybe 1912.

Good luck on the song dogs.

A good load for that gun is the Remington Game Load. It is a low pressure load with 1oz of 6,7 1/2, or 8 shot.

It's like their old Shurshot ammo. You have enough variety with the 6 shot and the 7 1/2-8 shot for most upland hunting.

If it has nitro stamped on it a Suhl made gun will have block letters and a Zella-Mahlis will have nitro in script style letters.

It is a Suhl gun. Markings on the rifle barrel are 88 m/m over a 72 with 10 18 above a 647. Standard proof marks with crowns above N's and crown's above U's.
I have never delved deeply into the subject but I have always wonder if drillings were made during WW I or was production stopped to focus on war output.

I lucked out Black Friday because Sportsmans W/H and another haunt had Remy 1 OZ game loads for $8 a box. Now if I can find some cheap 9.3x72R dies I will be set.

Many THX for the replies.

A fun plinker load for the 9,3X72R is 14gr Trail Boss under a 95gr Makarov bullet.

...and, there is no such thing as cheap 9,3X72R dies, just less expensive. grin

Hawk makes a good bullet for the 9,3X72R, their 200gr. 40 grains of IMR 30-31 is a good starting load.

I presently don't own a 9,3X72R gun, since I recently sold my 16/9,3X72R cape gun. It's a capable deer round out to 125-150 or so yards. I would guess your gun was proofed October 1918.

Be SURE to put some white grease on the hinge pin when you go out to shoot, and enjoy your great Classic. cool

I would be very careful in shooting Remington game loads, even the light loads. In my opinion, one puts there stock and barrels in jeopardy. I have a Franz Sodia 16 that is very light that someone lengthened the chambers on. I would not shoot anything with more than 7,000 psi and use 7/8 or 1 oz loads. The chambers do not have much meat one has a chance of swelling or rupturing them. IMR has many good loads for most of the gauges that shows 7k or less on pressures.

In addition, these old guns do not have fresh wood, and heavier loads can easily cause damage to the stocks.
