Fellows is there any good way to determine a 99H 22h.p. from a early 99F if they both had the steel buttplates, since the serial numbers overlap and the H could be ordered with a steel buttplate? I have what could be either model as it has a steel buttplate numbered to the gun and the serial number is 216,xxx. Maybe a letter is the only way?
Oh boy, you're getting into a real bag of worms with this question.
In my data I have a 2165xx lettering as a 99-F. The early 1899-H had a hollowed out butt stock. The 99-F did not. Let us know what you find under the butt plate, please.

Rick, serial #216,8xx and when I took the butt plate off the stock is not hollowed out. I took the plate off a 303 that I know is a F and both stocks look the same.
