I pulled this off of Steve Master's tropical weather blog at www.wunderground.com

Quote
The high temperature in Death Valley reached 125 degrees both Saturday and Sunday, which should cheer up the competitors in today's Badwater Ultramarathon, billed as "the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet". The race starts out in Badwater, Death Valley (just down the road from Furnace Creek, Dante's Peak, and other hellishly named Death Valley attractions!). The competitors run non-stop for 135 miles and three days across Death Valley in the heat of day, across three mountain ranges with a combined vertical ascent of 13,000', and finish at 8,000 feet altitude on Mt. Whitney.

Incredible...

Incredible, yes...incredibly stupid. The human body isn't made for that kind of punishment. Sooner or later, it'll demand it's pound of flesh.

As far as the distance, the Apaches, men women and children, could famously cover fifty miles in a day over rough terrain when pressed, sometimes outdistancing mounted pursuit. So I expect it can be done by the lean.

I'm wondering though how on earth you maintain a 97.6 F body temperature in that kind of heat. I didn't think it was possible.

And sometimes the not so lean. I seem to remember JFK (probably under the influence on one of his chemical adventures) suggesting that Americans of all stripes should take a 50 mile hike. A surprising number for the time (this was back when it seemed like every other person smoked something) took him up on it and quite a few were successful. Geeez............and I was patting myself on the back earlier today for an 8 miler in 92 degree heat.

Oh well....I guess I'll sleep in the hair shirt tonight just to atone for my inadequacy.

Alaska has an annual 150 mile wilderness extreme race. They try to do a different route every year, always through some of the wildest, roughest country you can find. Mountains and bad water to cross or navigate are always on the agenda. Maybe one or two checkpoints (not always), and about that many rules. Start. Finish. Stay alive (optional).

Hypothermia, rather than hyperthermia is the enemy here. And we have bears. They have bigger teeth than, and are just about as poisionous as snakes. Finish time is usually about 3 days. Competitors must go in teams of two for whatever safety that offers.

I usually drink a hot buttered rum or three to those (tough!) idiots during the race, or just after.

No illusions about being tough, have been "lucky" to dance with one or two that were and still live to tell about it.

Yeah but how many different species of birds did they catalog on the trip Birdy? (grin)

There's some animals out there.
