A friend just inherited one in 300 Savage, serial number 337992. The blueing is about 90% or better, no rust at all! Round barrel with gold bead front sight. It has a straight grip and someone added a recoil pad, they did an O.K. job. He's curious as to when it was made and what it might be worth. Just a ballpark figure of course!

Wow... the silence is deafening.
Tex, not enough info to figure out model. Probably early 99E, 99F or 99A. 1931 or thereabouts is the mfr date. Recoil pad probably kills collector value, but still has some as a shooter. Without pics tough to tell.. you might be missing something. Any chance of getting pics?
If you want a ballpark figure for insurance or whatnot with what you've told us with no further info... if I was to see that at a gun store on the rack, I'd expect it to be priced around $500. Collector wouldn't pay that, but somebody would eventually pick it up.

Calhoun must be more of a "collector" than I am 'cause the recoil pad kinda ruins the rifle for a "collector", but NOT for a hunter/shooter like me.
However, I can't think of any caliber available back in 1931 in any Model 99 Savage that NEEDED a recoil pad.
I go along with his statement as to the year of manufacture and to the possible model, but I'd estimate the rifle would sell for an amount closer to $600 than to $500, BUT (!!!) "condition" is VERY important, so he may be right-on-the-mark if the wood isn't just about "perfect".
Of course, with these "crazy" prices they're getting for old rifle these days, it might "go" for even $700 or more on Guns America or a similar web site. Without a LOT more information (and maybe a picture), it's really hard to even guess at the rifle's "value".
My Age List also puts it's "birthday" in late 1931... it's a "Great Depression" baby that had a retail price of close to $50 new... unless it's an "H" Model Carbine in which case it sold for about $40. Of course, during the Great Depression, things often sold for MUCH less than their retail price.

Ron, I personally don't mind a good d&t job to add a scope, or sling studs. But recoil pads annoy me:-) I can shoot my 300 EG with it's metal buttplate for a long time before the recoil even becomes noticeable.
And I don't feel like going above $500 without more info or a pic. Throw $700 on the insurance amount if you want to mke sure you can replace it, and if you are sure you can get that out of the insurance company.

It sounds like it might be a 99-E like the one I just got. There's of picture on the thread, "Picked up this pair today". Mine is a 250-3000 and has a 22" barrel. The 300sav had a 24" barrel.

I agree with you 100%, my friend... that's why I wrote, "[color:"red"]However, I can't think of any caliber available back in 1931 in any Model 99 Savage that NEEDED a recoil pad.[color:"/"]"

OMGGGGGGG... "painted"???? And "red" yet?!?!? You GOTTA be kidding?!?
Now you're talkin' a complete wood refinishing... a lot of work if it's done right.
Who would DO that to a rifle?!?!? A real "goober" job!
Revised value: $350-$400

Sounds a lot like the one I posted back on the 16th of July (Need help on 99 (R..K..EG ?) ). The Serial # is even very close and Hell, mine has a black painted tip! Looks like Bubba got a box of crayons!
Shoots very well, But will NEVER be a collector to anybody but me. You can do a search and see pic.s of mine to compare.
I would put the price closer to $300 .
Hillbillies and Savage 99's are a match made in heaven!
