Dear fellow Savage Fanatics...

I have been looking at a Savage for the last couple of days. The serial number says it was manufactured by "Savage REPEATING Arms Company", but the stamp simply says "Savage Arms Co." which would be more in line with the time frame of the 99's rather than the 1895's.

I have seen two other examples of this model and they both say "Savage REPEATING Arms Co.". As shown in the example below:

So I am confused by the difference in the stamping and wonder if this is a gun built from parts and not an original.

The bluing also seems to be in better condition than the general condition shown by the receiver. Making me wonder if it is a replacement barrel.

Admittedly I am new to collecting 99's. There are also features about the breach such as the load indicator that are missing in this one that do appear on other 1895s.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It's not an 1895, so how do I know that for sure wink

And it's not because I had an 1895 1/2 & 1/2.

Can someone give me a link then to a more accurate database of serial numbers? The link I have been using indicated it was an 1895 and seems to be providing inaccurate information.
Thanks.

I was typing on my phone and it took awhile oops. An 1895 barrel address is the lower one in the top picture. The letters match top and bottom, early 1899 still had the "brackets" but didn't line up.

The 1895's had 4 digit serials. The 1899's started with serial 10,000. Your rifle has a 1/2&1/2 brl so is an 1899-C.

Hard to give a value when only part of the barrel has been shown.

When you are putting in the serial number at www.savage99.com, don't include the period. It gets confused. VERY early 1899C.
