Search didn't work for me. Anyone have good mid-range loads using 358429 and Unique? Looking for around 1000 fps. What alloy would you recommend at this approximate velocity?

It's tough to beat Elmer Keith's old .38 Special load of five (5) grains Unique behind the 358429 in .38 Special cases. It's a little slower than you want, but close. In .357 magnum brass, 5.5 to 6 grains should give you close to 1,000 fps, especially if you are shooting an N frame S&W with the short cylinder that requires crimping over the front barrel band. If you can crimp in the regular crimp groove you may need to increase the charge to 6.5-7 grains to get 1,000 fps.
By the way, I once dropped a 125lb. doe with the Keith load from a K-38 Smith. It was a bang flop at 35 yards.
As for alloy, 1/2 lead 1/2 wheel weights is hard enough at those speeds.

I'm loading 5.3 gr Unique in 38 Spl cases under the Lyman 358429 from Western Bullet Co. It shoots well from a 4" Security Six. Should be about 1000 fps or so, haven't chrono'd it.

I'll be running them out of a stainless version of that pistol. Thanks!

7.0 grains of HS6 has worked well for me.

If you want Unique try 6.5 gr with the 170 Keih looking bullet or 8.5 gr of HS-6 both with regular primers. Both of these loads shot well in a Smith 686 and a 8 3/8" barrel and my GP100 and a 6" barrel.

One of my favorite .38 spl loads is the 160 grain LBT-WFN over 6 grains of Unique. It does a little bit more than 1000 fps from a 4" barrel. It should probably be considered a fairly stout +P loading, but it's really no big shakes in any type of K Frame .38 or .357.

I'm thinking about 5 1/2gr Unique is what you're after. And you'd get near the same speed dropping down to 5.0-5.2 and putting them in 38 cases.

I just returned from testing some loads and am very satisfied with PowerPistol. I am loading 6.5 grs. with a 150 LSWC and getting right at 1050 fps.

PastorDan, what lube are you using? I had weird fouling with PowerPistol and some commercial cast bullets with commercial lube. I chocked it up to some bad match-up with powder/lube, as I didn't have the same problem with other powders, or other bullets with different lube. That said, those were 158's, and shot just above 1000 in 38 cases. Don't recall the charge, but it was +P, and was very, very accurate.

I have had a lot of luck with using HS-6 in mid-range 357 loads with cast bullets. Generaly I use 8.5 or 9.0 grs under either a Missouri Bullets 158 LSWC or my hand cast 165 gr. WFN. This yields 1100 fps from my S&W 4" 686-5 Mountain Gun. and is fairly pleasent to shoot.
Before that I was using 6.5 grs of HP-38 with the same bullets. It also ran close to 1100 but was somewhat higher pressure. Now that I have plenty of HS-6, I keep my HP-38 use to the lighter loads.
