I have an opportunity to purchase a Sako model 75-7mm Rem Ultra Mag. New in box. Never shot. I know Sako is a premier firearm maker. Don't know anything about the caliber. Anyone know the particulars of this caliber and what the gun would be worth? Thanks for the input, ahead of time. When did this caliber hit the market? I think this may be too much gun for me--I have been using 06's for over 35 yrs. on whitetails and more boom and kick--I don't need. But, I am curious. Good shootin'.

I only know what I have read and the one Sako 75 that I own. It is a SS/Walnut in 300WM. I bought it used but it appeared to be shot very-very little. My normal first range session is usually 2 different bullets with 3 different powder charges and sometimes 2 different powders. Just kind of a mix and match and see what happens for the first range session. Mine shot 165 Interbonds with 72grs of IMR4350 and 180 Hornady Flatbases with 71grs 4350 or 75.5grs of R22 into 5/8 to 3/4". All 6 groups were under an inch and the same poi. Never had it out since. No need. They are a little heavier than I prefer but you can't have everything.
How much are they asking. The Deluxe models can be spendy.
I attached a pic of 2 groups.

As to the gun and maker, they are first rate all the way. The 7mm ultra mag is way overbore, and has slightly more case capacity than the 7mm STW, and significantly more than the 7mm Weatherby/Remington cases. I like the 300 ultra mag and the STW, but have never been able to like the 7mm ultra - too much powder for so little gain over the STW. However, the case doesn't have a belt - if that matters to you. I want to say the ultra mags were first offered by Sako about 5 years ago and had a 2 or 3 year run before they were dumped, as were the STW and the Weatherby chamberings in favor of the WSM's. At the end of their run these guns were being closed out and you could find pretty good deals - $650 for SS/synthetics and about $1050 for deluxes (found a batch of the STW's for $925 - that's a smokin' deal - and kinda still wish I had bought one). Before the closeout, deluxes would run (typically) between $1350-$1425 at a gunshop. Of course, they are much more expensive now, pushing almost $1600 typically. Hope this helps.

We won a rifle at the SCI convention otherwise I would not have worked with the caliber-too over bore. If you bed the action Sako will not warrenty the gun. My stock cracked at the top & after a lot of screaming I finally managed to have it replaced. Sako does not want to talk to customers. Their website does not even list a phone no. for customer service. When Beretta purched Sako customer service is something that is handled over the internet. Just send orders. I will never own another Beretta gun. I currently own 3.

I agree with some of the others here. I can't like the 7MM Ultra. caliber. I have no experience with it, but see little to recommend it over the STW, or even the Rem./Wby. 7mms.

One article I read said it was a difficult round to handload, as pressures were quirky, with small increases in charge sometimes demonstrating pressures in excess of expectations.

Otherwise, the 75 Deluxe is a very nice rifle. Nowadays $1200 would be a screaming deal, while $1500-1600 is about average.

Hey Trojanhorse,

The Sako 75 Deluxe is one pretty rascle. But you definately will have more boom and kick from the 7 Ultra.
I agree with most of the previous posters. Those guns in that caliber seem to be worth quite a bit less than the same gun in say a 270-3006-7 Rem. mag.

But, if you have a use for one or want to add to the looks of your gun safe--- Go for it. I know I have done this in the past-- Some of them I am more proud of than others.

Round up the usual suspects. The 7mm Ultra I am speaking of was also won from the safari Int. Seems like they bought all the guns that were going to be discontinued(caliber-wise) and awarded as prizes at the convention and one to each state(among new magazine subscribers) To all the nice shooters that replied to my query: thanks ever so much for the great insight. I will stick with Rem 700 Mountain LSS in '06 SPRFD. I can handle the recoil at the bench and the gun only weighs 7lbs or so with a Lewy 2.5X8 VXlll. Shoots great with 125Bal. Tips and REL. 15. Grps. 1"/1 1/2" @100 and about the same at 200. I don't need no stinkin' Sako. My wife thanks you from the bottom of her heart!
