You can occasionally still find them with decent wood...

A couple of mine; first one is an RSI 7x57. older rifle with red pad Second one is my .45-70 that i got about 6 yrs ago. The RSI has the nicest wood that I've ever seen on a #1

The good old days seem to be gone forever for beautiful wood on the # 1's.
At this point, I'm just grateful they are still making #1's.
And glad I have the ones I do.

Beautiful wood for sure! But, my newer, UGLY WOOD #1 in 45-70 is a shooter and a keeper. It is more accurate than I am and if I scratch it in the field, I'm OK with it. Some of the wood in the above pictures would be hard for me to take hunting in the bush.
Start young, hunt hard, and enjoy God's bounty.

This big guy has decent wood on it. Not great, mind you, but pretty decent. .475 Turnbull, less than 100 made, is what I was told by Turnbull. It shoots, too:

Scratched up.................another thin coat of Tru-Oil as a winter project fixes it right up

I hate the 2X4 wood they put on No.1's lately. Like this 2005 RSI in 7X57. And this 2009 Medium Sporter in 9.3 X74R.
If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer but how he hunted it.

I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum. I do tend to fit in well wherever I go in person. The campfire is the most outside exposure I get. No TV, no newspaper.

#1's have always been a cheap way into a pretty rifle...
