I tickle it with H335 and LC brass. Runs at 3050 from a 20" barrel.

I did a 6x45 planning to shoot that bullet, my rifle hates them, go figure. It loves 70 tnts and 75 speer and sierra HPs though.
I get 2975 with the 70's and a 2900 with the 75's with H335 Benchmark works pretty well too

I like it much. I've killed deer, turkey, fox and jackrabbits with it. Mine has a 1-8" twist. I still say the 223 or AI version is a better mousetrap, but the 6x45 is fun and works.

thank you steelhead, that gives me a lot to think about I love the 223 but my 69,70gr. macth buulets keep penciling thru the varmints and that takes the fun out of it for me and most of the time you cant even tell if you hit them and you have to go out and look. I was thinking 6x45 with a 70gr. ballistic tip would give me what im looking for.

For a lower velocity 70gr varmint bullet, I'd try the Speer TNT. You won't have any penciling with TNTs.

53gr Vmax will not pencil, I'm sure some of the Bergers would be the same.
A 75gr Amax don't pencil either.

I agree with steelheads above posts. the 223 normal or AI is the better way to go if the law where you live allows its use for big game. I did a 6x45 because my home state won't allow deer hunting with 22 CFs.
I shoot 70 VLD bergers and 75 Amax in my quick twist 223s and they expand for sure if you want to shoot the heavies in a 22 cal

try the 75 amax, it works in the 9 twist 223 I have. If you aren't shooting at terribly long ranges its pretty hard to beat a 55 or 60 grain ballistic tip though.
My new favorite bullet in my 223 AI for predators and game is the 65 gr sierra gameking. kills well and has a pretty good BC.
Try it, I think you will like it

Thanks for the bullet rec Dude. The 65gr GK has slipped under my radar but I just checked Midway's site for a quick BC check (claimed .303), and couldn't believe the number of consistently positive reviews. Now I'll have to try a box or two...........especially since Vmax and BTs sell out much faster than Sierra on my local shelves.

The sierra 65 are not nearly as explosive a bullet as the plastic tipped ones bullets, they make a nice mushroom and shed some weight though.
I have used them for everything from groundhogs too deer with no complaints. They aren't the best straight varmint bullet because they aren't very violent expanders but they are pretty easy on coyote and bobcat hides and never splash out like Vmaxs do occasionally. Pretty good deer bullet too.

Just finished a 6x45 on a Kimber of Oregon Model 84 action, 22"Brux, 1-9 twist, to factory contour. This is my "Party Pig" rifle for edible varmints, working close and quiet around tall stands down in the south Texas brush. I've had stellar results with bullet weights 70-100 grains using Benchmark, which is the most consistent powder I've tried in this rifle.
The 70 Ballistic Tip will shoot right through both shoulders of a javalina at 2960 fps so it is pretty tough. For an all around bullet, the 85 gr NPAR shoots 1/2" groups at 2700 fps, and I've got some 80gr NBT's to try next. Most surprisingly, I found some old stock Hornady 100gr roundnoses that I drive at 2500 fps--they have cleaned up two spike bucks quite neatly, each shot at 50 yards or less.

Curious Steelhead why do you think the 223/223AI is a better round? Not disagreeing just wondering your thoughts?

p.s. do not have much experience with either but am gaining some with my recent 6X45 build

Better BC for 65-90 grain bullets (which is the sweet spot for that case size and big game animals) mainly in my opinion...
A 105 grain bullet to take the BC away from .224" bullets at 2500 is not the best spot to be in...
I'll take a 75 or 80 grain .224" Berger with a BC in the upper .4's at 3K over a 100 + grain Berger at 2600 or so with a BC near 0.5 any day...
I love my 6x45 with that said -

Yes and better game bullets for the 223 in that 'sweet spot', much better available.
